Lab 9
Lab 9
- The purpose of the lab exercise is to titrate using a standard EDTA solution to determine the
total hardness, or total calcium and magnesium ion concentration, in a water sample.
- The purpose of the laboratory exercise is, what is the use of complexometric titration for the
estimation of amount of total hardness in water and for the estimation of metal ions.
- The purpose of the laboratory exercise is to learn about complexometric titration and the
types of indicators that we should use in such a type of titration.
Briefly describe the procedure used in the activity. (Brief in this context means short but
it comprehensively covers the needed information)
- An EDTA solution was made to be the titrant. This is important to know because, if a
solution is acidic a certain indicator needs to be used. The EBT indicator will change colors at
the equivalence point of an acidic solution, but not if it was a basic solution. A buffer was also
added to that solution to slow down the change of pH. Since the buffer was added, the pH was
slowed down so much that an accurate equivalence point can be detected.
- The result of the activity are in Metal - EBT Complex is wine red while in Metal- EDTA
Complex is colourless.
Reaction to the video (You may state here whether you like or dislike the video based on
the manner how it was presented.) Provide reasons for your views or opinion (1
paragraph will do for this part)
- I enjoy this video. The chemist did a great job of explaining the subject. A really impressive
presentation. It greatly aids in my understanding of the idea.
- The experiment was properly explained, and the results were interesting. Therefore, we liked
the way the chemist presented it.
- It is well explained, I was amazed at how he presented the experiment through animation.
This kind of video can really help students in their studies.
- I like how the video is presented, even if it is just in the form of a PowerPoint presentation
and voiceover, because all the important things are already in the video and also because there
are animations which help us to understand the procedure.
Important learnings acquired from the video (1 paragraph will do for this part)
- The most significant lesson I took away from the video was that the Metal-EBT complex is
wine red in color, and the indicator anion is responsible for the blue color that developed at
the titration's completion. Additionally, it indicates that we must add the basic buffer
(NH4OH+NH4Cl) in order to keep the pH constant. In general, EBT is soluble in water but
insoluble in ethanol, acetone, and butanol.
- The important learnings acquired from the video is, complex will formed when metal ion or
cation in a complex accepts an electron pair from one or more ligands. Ligands must have
atleast one electron pair to donate and there should be co-ordinate covalent bonding. Always
keep in mind that during titration we use Disodium salt of EDTA instead of normal EDTA,
because Disodium salt of EDTA is soluble in water while normal EDTA is insoluble in water.
- I've learned and understood more about complexometric titration, such as how we should
add a basic buffer solution to keep the pH of the solution constant and how the color of the
indicator indicates whether or not it is complex with metal ions: Wine red indicates that it is
complex with metal ions, whereas blue does not.
Conclusions
- As a result, I conclude that the indicator calmagite combination with magnesium ions is
bright wine red. When all remaining red is gone and just pure blue is left, that is where the
line ends. Since the reaction of the indicator complex with the EDTA is slow, the solution is
often warmed throughout the titration.
- In conclusion, the indicator is blue when it is not complexed with metal ions. When the
indicator is complexed with metal ions, the color turns wine red.
Recommendations
- In regards to the texts from the PowerPoint presentation, we recommend adding a subtitle to
the video.
- I recommend that there should be someone demonstrating the procedure so that we can more
easily understand it and see how the color changes.
