Math 122 Final Exam Study Guide

The topics for the final exam are listed below. The final will be on Monday 12/12/21 from 10:00 am to 11:50 am. It
The exam will contain short answer questions from the topics below. You are expected to demonstrate your
knowledge by showing your work. Your understanding should be communicated using the correct steps in your
solution. The use of a TI-83/83 is permitted on the test. No other aids will be permitted. Below are the topics you are
expected to know for the exam. The homework and supplemental problems form the book are great places to find
examples of each topic.

1) Chapter 2: Functions
• Transformations of Functions:
o Section 2.6 Problems 55-78
• Writing the equation of a line
o Section 2.4 Problem 65-78, Section 2.5 Problem 5-22
• Difference Quotient
o Section 2.8 Problems 33-44
• Algebra of functions and Domain
o Section 2.8 Problems 9-32, 47-64

2) Chapter 3: Introduction to Polynomials and Rational Functions


• Graphing a polynomial based on its zeros and their multiplicities.
o Section 3.2 Problems 59-76
• Synthetic and Long Division
o Section 3.3 Problems 9-22, 27-38
o Section 3.4 Problems 33-38
• Answer questions about a given graph a rational function
o Section 3.5 Problems 13-16
• Solve either a polynomial or a rational inequality
o Section 3.6 Problems 21-54, 63-84

3) Chapter 4: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions


• Graph either an exponential or a logarithmic function based on transformations. Failure to label the graph
(key points and asymptote) will result in the loss of points.
o Section 4.2 Problems 23-32 and Section 4.3 71-78
• Rewriting a sum/difference of logarithms into a single logarithm using the log properties. Must show each
step to receive full credit.
o Section 4.4 Problems 45-68
• Rewriting a single logarithm into a sum/difference of logarithms using the log properties. Must show each
step to receive full credit.
o Section 4.4 Problems 25-44
• You will have to solve one exponential equation and one logarithmic equation by hand. No credit will be
awarded if the solution is found using the calculator.
o Section 4.5 Problems 5-34, 37-60

6) Chapter 7: Conics
• Finding the elements of an ellipse, hyperbola, or parabola from a given equation.
o Section 7.1 Problems 33-42, Section 7.2 Problems 33-40, Section 7.3 Problems 45-52
• Write the equation of an ellipse, hyperbola, or parabola from a given conditions.
o Section 7.1 Problems 43-56, Section 7.2 Problems 41-50, Section 7.3 Problems 61-68

7) Chapter 8: Sequences and Series


• Find the specific term of either a geometric or arithmetic sequence
o Section 8.2 Problems 19-24 (Part b) and 41-46, Section 8.3 Problems 35-42 and 45-48
