Cooling Tower Report

The document provides details from a student visit to a cooling tower, including its working principles, technical specifications, control area, safety considerations, and maintenance needs. The cooling tower uses evaporative cooling to extract waste heat from water and release it into the atmosphere using fans. It has components like distribution systems, nozzles, and air inlet louvers. Proper maintenance is important to ensure safe and efficient operation of the cooling tower.

1. Introduction

Cooling tower is a special type of heat exchanger because it is water-cooling

systems. It is a device for cooling large quantity of water which circulating in a water
recycling system. The water is used as the refrigerant for cooling the heat exchanger
equipment. At the same time, it also works to extracts waste heat to the atmosphere
by cooling tower fan.

Class of Process Instrumentation & Control (PIC) and Industrial Plant

Maintenance (IPM) was going to visit Cooling Tower at Kolej Teknologi 6, German-
Malaysian Institute, Jalan Ilmiah, Taman Universiti, 43000 Kajang, Selangor. The
visit was held on 17th January 2020 at 10:30 a.m. after class.

2. Working Principle

There are many different types of cooling towers which cross flow and counter
flow are for Natural Draft while for Mechanical Draft, it has three types which are
forced draft, induced draft cross flow and induced draft counter flow. By the way, the
cooling tower working principles stay pretty much the same. Most of it work based on
the principle of ‘Evaporative Cooling’.

Evaporative Cooling is the process where warm water from an industrial process
is pumped up to the top of the cooling tower where the water distribution system is.
The water then gets distributed by cooling tower nozzles to the wet deck. At the
same time, air is being drawn through the air-inlet louvers forcing water to evaporate.
Evaporation causes the heat to be removed from the make-up water. The hot air
naturally rises out of the tire.
