ES AR 31 A Assignment2

1. The document contains the solutions to three problems involving stress and strain calculations for mechanical parts and structures. 2. The first problem calculates the average normal stress at two points on a composite shaft made of a pipe and solid rod. 3. The second problem determines the average normal stress in a turnbuckle under an axial force, as well as the stress in each bolt shank. 4. The third and final problem calculates (a) the average normal stress in each bar of a truss under a given force, (b) the maximum force the truss can withstand before stresses exceed a limit, and (c) the average shear stress in a pin connecting the truss members.

Solve the following problems:

1. The built-up shaft consists of a pipe AB and solid rod BC . The pipe has an inner diameter of 20 mm and
outer diameter of 28 mm. The rod has a diameter of 12 mm. Determine the average normal stress at points
D and E and represent the stress on a volume element located at each of these points.

2. If the turnbuckle is subjected to an axial force of P = 900 lb, determine the average normal stress developed
in section a – a and in each of the bolt shanks at B and C. Each bolt shank has a diameter of 0.5 in.

3. For the given figure shown below:

(a). Determine the average normal stress in each of the 20-mm diameter bars of the truss. Set P = 40 kN.
(b). If the average normal stress in each of the 20-mm diameter bars is not allowed to exceed 150 MPa,
determine the maximum force P that can be applied to joint C .
(c). Determine the average shear stress developed in pin A of the truss. A horizontal force of P = 40 kN is
applied to joint C. Each pin has a diameter of 25 mm and is subjected to double shear.

(a). σBC = 159 MPa; σAC = 95.5 MPa; σAB = 127 MPa
(b). P = 37.7 kN
(c). τA = 50.9 MPa
