1. It is known that 5% of the books bound at a certain binding unit have defective bindings.
Find the probability that 2 out of 100 books bound by this binding unit will have
defective bindings.
2. State and prove the memoryless property of exponential distribution.
3. Let (X,Y) be a two dimensional positive continuous random variable having the joint

11. a) (i) Find the MGF of binomial distribution and hence find its mean and variance .

(ii) The annual rainfall in inches in a certain region has a normal distribution with a
mean of 40 and variance of 16. What is the probability of that the rainfall in a
given year is between 30 and 48 inches.

13. a) (i) A machine goes out of order whenever a component part fails .The failure of this
part is in accordance with a Poisson process with a mean rate of 1 per week

(2) If there are 5 spare parts of this component in an inventory and the next supply
is not due in 10 weeks, find the probability that the machine will not be out of
order in the next 10 weeks.

11. a) (i) Prove that the limiting case of binomial distribution is Poisson distribution.

(ii) The mileage which car owners get with a certain type of radial tyre is a random
variable having an exponential distribution with mean 40,000 km. Find the
probabilities that one of these tyres will last (i) at least 20,000 km
(ii) at most 30,000 km
