Case Study 1

This document provides a case study assignment on green buildings for students. It asks students to form groups, research various aspects of green building design like thermal envelope, indoor environmental quality, cooling and heating systems, and produce a 15 page report and presentation. The case study focuses on the Oasia Hotel Downtown in Singapore as an example of a green building. It provides guidance on structuring the report and the marking criteria for the assignment.

4 REFERENCE
 Introduction
1. “Green building” is a building that features environmentally
friendly technology.

2. Technology that can save energy costs such as electricity and

water.

3. It can provide complete comfort and a healthy environment to the

public.

4. Oasia Hotel Downtown Building, Singapore is a building that

making "Green Building"  concept. This hotel gets certified by BCA.

5. Designed by the WOHA firm. The building has 27 floors this is

designed with the presence of green plants and flowering plants
that cover the outside of the building.

6. The green plants make the temperature the surface of the hotel is

cooler than the temperature ambient.
 Contents
1. Thermal envelope
This L-shaped Hotel creates a wind passage of 21 and 35
meters high in each sky terrace. Each atrium achieves an
approximate height and depth ratio of 1:1. With that, it can
divide the bright and airy environment with daylight and wind
blowing and evaporative cooling from water and shade from
greenery.

2. Indoor environmental quality (IEQ)

The hotel does not have a full-height curtain wall. It is covered
by 25,000 square meters of aluminium mesh screens and
1,800 vine plantings that will spread 3 to 5 meters across the
surface. With the greenery, the screen can function as a
shade filter, reducing heat and noise., prevents smog and
improves air quality.
3.COOLING AND COOLING LOADS
The cooling load is the amount of heat that need to be
removed. This building has a big space between blocks. the
spaces is needed as a cooling loads so the building can
maintain its temperature.

4. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning

This hotel inserted in naturally ventilated breezeway between
room blocks. These spaces throughout the high-rise with
dynamic internal views. These provide guests and occupants
generous amenity spaces throughout the high-rise that
functions as a heating, ventilation, and natural air conditioning.
5. Building energy management systems
The modern tower has evolved as a suite of engineering
solutions and financial efficiencies- maximized volume to
surface area ratio. While boasting efficient structures and
systems, building still account for nearly 40% of global energy
consumption. 60% is consumed by the common areas in
buildings.

6. Active collection and transformation of renewable

energy
Twenty-one species of creeper were selected and distributed
based on their sunlight requirements, rate growth, texture, and
colour. Some species produce colourful flower that attract
birds and insects.  The variety of plants also provide natural
resilience against disease carrying and destructive insects.

7. Domestic Water
An automatic irrigation system was designed to irrigate planter
boxes and garden beds on a 28-storey hotel next to Tanjong
Pagar MRT. The irrigation system has two water supplies via
a pumping system to levels 27 & 28 and a gravity feed supply
feeding the lower levels

8. Lighting Systems
This new hotel in central business area of Singapore features
a red screen as facade cladding with crawling plants softly
illuminated from the inner side. The architecture stands out as
a big lantern, creating an iconic nightscape. Up lights in three
sky terras cast silhouettes of trees onto the ceiling.

9. Daylighting

This building get daylighting from the spaces that were built
around the building and at the top of the skyscraper
10. Household appliances, consumer electronics and
office equipment
The hotel has 314 rooms and 100 hotel office units, where it
has a closed space cooled by a highly efficient variable cold-
water system and a condenser water pump. The management
and control system of this building has been confirmed by the
operation of the cold-water system.

 Summary
The green plot ratio measures the density of greenery
within a development, per the Urban Redevelopment
Authority. Oasia Hotel Downtown has a green plot
ratio of 1,100%, meaning the plants on the building
can cover more than 10 times the amount greenery
lost because of the hotel's construction, per the
factsheet. Rather than reducing the amount of
greenery in the city, the construction of the building
ends up adding to it instead.
