New research suggests that mobile phones should come with a health warning.
The research says that the average person spends more than 3.5 hours per day on their phone and
that this could lead to them ignoring their 1 to family, work or studies. The
authors don’t suggest that the effects are as 2 as those of cigarettes or alcohol,
but they do say a health warning is essential.
The study of 256 smartphone users asked how they used their device and found that the
most popular apps were those of 3 media sites (87%), followed by

messaging apps (52%) and then apps for viewing the 5
news (51%). The study also asked questions to try to determine the users’ 6
characteristics.
Although nearly half the people interviewed spoke of an 7 in social relations,
almost a quarter said their smartphones led to a breakdown in 8 with family and
friends. Some 60 participants spoke of an inability to express their 9 in
relationships due to severe distraction. The authors want to carry out another study with a larger
sample of people in the future.
