Physics and Measurement

Revision
 You’ve learnt how to measure length, time and mass.
 Different measuring instruments for length, time and mass has also been
studied.
 Traditional units and standard units of measurements were differentiated.
 Also, learnt that basic physical quantities are measurable.
After completing this unit you should be able to:

 understand concepts related to basic measurements;

 develop skills of measuring area, volume and density;
 develop skill in producing and evaluation of a design project applying the
laws of physics in its construction
 appreciate the interrelatedness of all things;
 use a wide range of possibilities for developing knowledge of the major
concepts with in physics.
Measuring Area
 Area of a surface is the space bounded by a certain line. The SI unit of
area is square meter. i.e. 𝑚2 .
 Other units are 𝑐𝑚2 , 𝑚𝑚2 , and 𝐾𝑚2 .

Calculating area
measuring surface area is done by measuring the length and width of the
surface and then finding the product of these measurements.

Areas of some common surfaces have simple mathematical relations with the
enclosing curves.
Calculating area
1. Area of a rectangular surface is given by the product of its length and width.
Area = Length × Width A=l×w
2. Area of a square surface is given by the product of two sides.
Area = Length × Length A = 𝑙2
3. Area of a triangular surface is given by the product of half of its base and
height.
1 1
Area= 2 x Base X height A=2xbxh
4. Area of a circular surface is given by:
Area = π × (𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑢𝑠)2 A = π𝑟 2
Example
1. What is the surface area of a table, if the length is 120 cm and its width is
80 cm?
2. What is the area of a square surface if its sides are 2m each?
3. Find the base area of a glass. If its base is circular with a diameter of 4 cm.
(take π=3.14)
Check point

1. What is an area? How can you measure it?

2. Write the equations for finding the areas of a rectangle, a square, a triangle
and a circle.
3. Explain the relation between the diameter and the radius of a circle.
4. Express the relation between 𝑚2 and other units such as 𝑐𝑚2 , 𝑚𝑚2 and
𝐾𝑚2 .
