AUSFL 2021-2022 Spring Term C Level – Midterm Exam Guidelines

How many components are there in the Midterm?

The midterm exam in all levels has three components: Booklet (Listening, Reading, Language), Writing and Speaking.

What units are students responsible for?

For all the components, students are responsible for Speakout Pre-Intermediate 1.1 – 9.2 (BOTH the Course Book
and the Supplementary Pack).

What are the item types in each component?

● Booklet
All the items in the booklet will be Multiple Choice and students must mark all their answers on an optical form.
The items may include some or all of the following question types:
• Listening: Multiple Choice and/or Matching (Students might hear the recordings ONCE or TWICE,
depending on the task.)
• Reading: Matching (headings, advertisements, people, places, actions, etc.), Multiple Choice, Guessing
Meaning from Context, Referring Expressions.
• Language (Grammar, Vocabulary and/or Function separately and/or combined): Multiple Choice, Cloze
Test and/or Individual Questions, Error Recognition.

● Writing
The writing question is chosen among those studied in class and/or in the course book and the pack of that level.
The answer will be evaluated according to AUSFL Writing Criteria. (See sample layout & TIPS below.)

● Speaking
Part 1: Spoken Production: Each student is asked two individual questions and expected to answer them IN
DETAIL. They do NOT interact with their pairs or with the jury. (See sample layout & TIPS below.)

Part 2: Spoken Interaction: Students are asked ONE level-based discussion question with TWO options and
expected to share their opinions, views and/or thoughts on the topic with their pairs. The students are
required to interact with each other, taking turns, asking/answering questions and giving their opinions. They DON’T
HAVE TO agree OR disagree with their pairs and they can express their opinions/views about both options so
that they can answer the question with more details!

Remember:
✓ To read the instructions carefully before answering the questions at all times.
✓ To mark your answers on the optic form carefully within the time limit of the booklet! There will NOT be any
extra time for copying your answers on the booklet onto the optic form, and the answers on the booklet will NOT
be graded.
✓ To make sure you understand the writing question correctly and answer only to the question on the writing
exam paper. If your answer has NO RELEVANCE to the question, it will be graded accordingly.

• Why do you want to join the forum?
• What do you study? their own expectations.
• What do you do in your free time?
• Ask question(s) about the other members.

Write your text between 80-100 words.

Remember:
➢ Your text will be graded according to AUSFL Writing Criteria.
➢ You should answer the question around the word limit, or your answer will lose points.
➢ If your answer has no relevance to the question, it will be graded 1 out of 20 (5 out 100).
➢ Your handwriting should be clear and easy to read.

TIP 3: Sometimes, the question has several prompts (items), so the instruction says: “You may/should
include:”
This means it is a GOOD IDEA for you to write about each of the prompts in an organized way because
they are probably important for this type of written text (task). So, trying to cover all the prompts will
make your text richer in content!
Still, remember: unless the instruction says “You must include:”, you DON’T HAVE TO cover ALL the
prompts (items) as long as you write your answer in an organized way with ENOUGH details!
WHEN the question DOES NOT have any prompts (probably because the question itself is enough or it is
an opinion paragraph or an essay, etc.), then you MUST FOCUS on the question and understand it
correctly!

TIP 4: WRITE your answer (text, paragraph, email, letter, essay, etc.) AROUND the WORD LIMIT!
In this sample question, it is a “text” and the word limit is BETWEEN 80-100 words.
This means, you must write an organized text and AROUND the 80-100 words (NOT too few; NOT too
many), as it is written in “Remember:” part above!

TIP 5: Make sure your text/email/paragraph/ essay/ etc. answers DIRECTLY and ONLY to the question
on this exam paper!
That means ALL the content (in your sentences or your whole text) is ONLY ANSWERING to the question
and the prompts if there are any.

TIP 6: Make sure your handwriting is CLEAR and EASY to read for your teachers – BAD and DIFFICULT to
read handwriting can prevent complete understanding…

MIDTERM EXAM BOOKLET
INTRODUCTION
This is the warming and preparation part of the exam.
Jury Script:

TIP 1: You will hear the highlighted parts/sentences during the exam – make sure you’re
familiar with them.

Good afternoon. Please have a seat. (Student A should sit on the left and Student B should sit on
the right. *In case of three scheduled OR random students, Student B should sit in the middle and the
3rd student should sit on the right.)

Can you please show me your ID cards and sign the attendance sheet? Thank you.

TIP 2: Have your student ID cards ready BEFORE entering the exam room for the jury to check
and sign the attendance sheet next to your name BEFORE starting the exam!

My name is… and this is my colleague… . We are going to do your speaking exam together.

(To Student A) What is your full name?

Thank you.
(To Student B) What is your full name?
Thank you.
Ask all the following questions to each student to make them comfortable before the exam without
further questions and comments.
➢ How are you today?
➢ Where are you from?
➢ What is your department?

OK, we can start the exam now. There is 1 part in the exam. Let’s start with the first
questions.

Now, please go to the PAIR NUMBER for the questions and the script.

PAIR …

Now I am going to ask each of you TWO questions in turn. Please, listen carefully and answer the
questions. OK, here are your first questions:

What are your plans for the future? Explain in detail.

Student
A I’ll repeat the question: What are your plans for the future? Explain in detail.*

What three words describe you best? Why? Explain in detail.

SET 1 Student
B I’ll repeat the question: What three words describe you best? Why? Explain in detail.*

TIP 3: You will hear the questions in the first part TWICE, so calm down and make sure you listen
carefully to the question to understand them correctly…
If you somehow still misunderstand, you’ll hear the questions for the 3rd but LAST time!

TIP 4: Answer the questions in the first part IN DETAIL.

This is not a suspect-police interrogation, so do NOT try to give the “short-cut direct answer” to
the questions; try to ADD details (where, when, who, how, why, etc. or some background
information, or some personal experiences, or some personal or impersonal examples, etc.)
Do NOT expect the jury to ask you further or other or different questions – they WON’T…
And remember: there is NO correct answer to the questions in the first part; they all try to make
you show/ prove your speaking skills are improving… You can try to show off!

* If there is NO answer, repeat the question for the 3rd and last time. Continue with the other student if still no
answer.

OK, here are your second questions:

What should students do to learn English well? Explain in detail.

Student
A I’ll repeat the question: What should students do to learn English well? Explain in detail.*
SET 2 What is the best city to go on holiday in Turkey? Why? Explain in detail.
Student
I’ll repeat the question: What is the best city to go on holiday in Turkey? Why? Explain in
B
detail.*

* If there is NO answer, repeat the question for the 3rd and last time. Continue with the other student if
still no answer.

2021-2022 Spring Term – AUSFL Testing Office

Thank you. In the second part, I’ll give you a discussion question with two options. Discuss the
options together in detail in about 2 or 3 minutes. We may stop you after your time is over. Here is
your question:

Hand over pair discussion sheet to the students. Then, read the discussion question aloud for the

recording.

Which one do you prefer: living alone or living with a roommate? Discuss the two options in detail.

TIP 5: You will hear the question and have the question slip (see the question) as well in the second
part.
So, AFTER you receive the question slip, READ it again to make sure you understand it correctly!

TIP 6: This part is a discussion part.

That means you will have TWO options to share your ideas about with your partners, so you DON’T
HAVE TO choose/focus on ONE option – when you share your ideas about your FIRST CHOICE, you
can talk about the SECOND option as well if you think you haven’t said (shown) enough!
Remember: you DON’T HAVE TO agree OR disagree with your partner – you can fully or partly agree
or disagree if you want…
Sharing your own ideas/opinions is much MORE important…

Now, you have one minute to think about the question.

After one minute: You can start now. (*FYI: Students do NOT have to reach an agreement.)

When their discussion/ time is over, retrieve the sheet: Thank you. Can I have the sheet back, please?
Your exam is over. Have a nice day.
