COURSE OVERVIEW: In todays age of information overload, analysis of information for appropriate decision making is extremely important. One of the simplest tools for effective decision making is spreadsheets. The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to the use of spreadsheets in data analysis. The course is designed as an hands-on course which will take the students through various aspects of using spreadsheets for storing, managing and analyzing data in different functional areas such as statistics and quantitative techniques, operations, finance and market research.

SESSION DETAILS TERM I - B Session 1: Mail merge and macros allow users to exploit the potential of any word processing software for multiple applications. In this session students will be introduced to using the mail merge for creating letters and envelopes etc. They will also be able to create and use Macros. a. Pre-reading This session assumes that the participants are conversant with creating, formatting and using documents. b. c. Activity: Exercises based on applications of mail merge and use of macros. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this session, students will be able to create documents, labels, envelopes etc using different data sources. The user will be able to record and run macros. The student will also be able to adjust the macro settings of the system.

Session 2: This session introduces students to the world of spreadsheets. The students will be able to make workbooks, worksheets, make the settings, insert and manage data in worksheets. a. Learning Outcome: After completion of this unit, students will be able to execute basic & intermediate features like- alignments, formatting cells, inserting columns & rows, Printing worksheets, and Copying / Referencing data between worksheets b. Session 3: This session will explain naming and referencing ranges, details of Data Validation and data consolidation. The student will also understand concepts like Sorting and Filtering, along with details of advanced filters and multi-level sorting. a. Learning Outcome: At the end of this session students will be able to use features to manipulate data. They will be able to use filter and sort the data. They will also be able to set up advanced filters. The student will also be able to write formulae for data processing. b. Session 4: All Spreadsheets include a large repository of predefined functions such as Mathematical, statistical, Date/Time, Logical, Text etc. This session will teach the students how to use these in-built functions and apply them appropriately. a. Activity: Exercises for this session will include application exercises which would help the students understand how and when various functions can be applied. b. Learning Outcome: By the end of this sessions the students will be able to apply and use different inbuilt functions such as Mathematical Functions, Logical and Text functions and Date/ Time Functions. c. Session 5: Data is collected for decision making. This session deals with using features of spreadsheets such as Descriptive Statistics and Charts for creating reports and explaining data. During this session the students will be able to unleash the potential of spreadsheets as a platform for application of concepts taught in basic QTB and OR. a. Learning Outcome: By the end of this session the students will be able to generate descriptive statistics data and interpret them. Students will also be able to create various kinds of charts and use them effectively for data representation for decision making. b. Integration: This Session would help students solve numerical problems in QT and OR using spreadsheets. The session will be a co-teaching session conducted by IT and Operations faculty .

Session 6: This session will be used for using spreadsheet for fitting a normal distribution and use the descriptive statistics for data interpretation. The exercises of this session would include application of quantitative techniques and Operations Research. a. Learning Outcome: By the end of this session the students will be able to fit a normal distribution and using it as a base for further analysis interpret the various statistics b. Integration: This session will be co-taught by faculty of IT and Operations area. Students will be using spreadsheets for applying distributions and interpreting data.

Term II A Session 7: If the exceptional mathematical modeling potential of Spreadsheets is to be tapped to its full potential, then several fundamental principles need to be understood. Some of tools used for basic data modeling will be introduced in this session. a. Learning Outcome: By the end of this session the students will be able to use Vlookup, HLookup, and Indirect for linking multiple worksheets and workbooks and extracting data. b. Session 8: Pivot tables are one of the most widely used tools for creating different views of the data by slicing and dicing. These are used for creating multidimensional OLAP cubes which can be used for data interpretation and reporting. This session deals with creating Pivot Table sand Charts and using them effectively. a. Learning Outcome: By the end of this session the students will be able to create Pivot Table, summarize data effectively and create reports by appropriate grouping and subtotalling.

Session 9: This session introduces the use of Solver Add-in for Linear and non-linear optimization problems. The exercises for these session will help a student apply the concepts of Production and Operations management to solve a given optimization problem using the SOLVER add-in. a. Learning Outcome: By the end of this session the students will be able The Solver Add-in. The student will be able to solve optimization problems.

Sessions 10-11: Statistical Regression is the process of discovering any mathematical relationship between two sets of data. This finds use in finding the dependence between data or making predictions. These sessions will deal with handling application based situation where the linear regression models can be applied for analysis. a. Learning Outcome: By the end of these sessions, students will be able to use the Analysis ToolPak Add-in and use functions such as INTERCEPT, FORECAST, TREND, REGRESSION option in ANALYSIS TOOLPAK Add-in b. Session 12: No tool is of any use unless it is applied effectively. This session aim to help the students apply all the features done so far to data interpretation in real-life application situations. This session would comprise of exercises of Market Research which can be done effectively using Excel as tool. The session will also involve creating and using templates.

TERM II - B Session 13-16: Sessions 13 to 18 are designed to introduce the application of spreadsheets for financial arithmetic. These sessions will acquaint the students with various financial functions available in excel and their use. These functions are used for financial arithmetic and Investment analysis a. Learning Outcome: By the end of this session the students will be able to use Financial functions such as FV, PV, PMT, PPMT , IPMT, RATE, NPER , NPV, XNPV, IRR, XIRR b. Integration: Sessions 15 and 16 will be co-taught by faculty of Finance Area for better understanding and application

Session 17-18: These sessions will introduce the students to application of spreadsheet based functions and tools to effectively analyze HR related data. It would involve an application of all tools used over the entire course work.
