Activity 5. Now that you've understood Hickel's concept of de-development. You

require to explain the following ideas of the essential knowledge part of this unit

.1. What is the primary objective or purpose of the Sustainable Development Goals of
the United Nations?

The primary objective, or purpose, of the Sustainable Development Goals of the

United Nations is to eradicate poverty. Because it primarily affects our growth and
stems a variety of issues that the world is currently facing. Moreover, if this objective
could be attained, people would have better and equal access to what we call "a
quality life."

2. What is the standardized unit that measures resource use and waste?

The standardized unit that measures resource use and waste is the global hectare, also
known as the GHA. This is essential, as it serves as the basis for knowing how
countries produce and consume our natural resources and how that could affect our
world in general.

3. What is the standard response to eradicate poverty?

The standard response to eradicating poverty was to encourage countries to de-

develop, a structural change that redefines our way of achieving progress. It is subject
to slowing down the rapid growth of rich countries while the poor catch up. With this,
people would have equal access to our natural resources without over consuming
them. And most importantly, it would eradicate poverty, especially in poor countries.

4. What is the threshold of the Earth for adequately sustaining life?

The threshold of the earth for adequately sustaining life is 1.8 hectares according to
the module and 1.9 hectares according to current studies. It collects data to assess our
consumption of natural resources, serving as a reminder that our resources are finite.
Thus, it encourages people to be mindful of their actions, which may greatly affect it.

5. According to the majority of middle-and high-income countries, what puts the

planet and society at risk?

According to the majority of middle- and high-income countries, the increasing

number of people, especially those living in poverty, puts the planet and society at
risk since this heightens our world’s consumption and production. With the high
demands, it may deplete the world’s supply. And consequently, it could endanger our
world and all the living things in it.

6. How many hectares should each of us consume annually based on the resources
available on the planet?

According to the resources available on our earth, each of us should use 1.8 global
hectares annually.

7. In this article, what are the two items about the quality of life?

The two items on the quality of life list were life expectancy and happiness. It states
how the Sustainable Development Goals were mainly created to eradicate poverty and
other issues in our world so people could live a longer and happier life.

8. What crisis on the planet would force us to slow down if we do not do so

voluntarily?

Climate change would force us to slow down if we did not do so voluntarily. It is the
law of nature, a result of humans' greed and irresponsibility. Thus, we should change
our definition of progress in order to prevent this from happening.

9. According to Dr. Jason Hickel, what must be done instead of urging developing
countries to 'catch up" with rich ones?

According to Dr. Jason Hickel, we should "de-develop," a theory where rich countries
"catch down" instead of urging developing countries to "catch up," an idea that
proposes a new way of attaining progression without overconsuming our world.

10. How would the different areas of the world react to the idea of de-development?

If we look realistically at our current circumstances, it may seem like a disadvantage

for rich countries. However, if we think about the bigger picture, the idea of de-
development benefits our world in general. Through this, we may live a happier and
longer life. And I think that’s mainly the essence of seeking a quality life.
