The Learning Center has had many ups and downs this semester. Mr. Jacob Douglas a student of the Learning Center was killed in a car crash
on March 9, 2012. Jacob was a delightful, respectful, and a one of a kind student. He was always lending a hand to help someone. He was the
true definition of a Good Samaritan and a man of service. We will miss Jacob Michael Douglas, but we will never forget all of the memories and
goodness that he left behind.
Ms. Leigh’s Character Counts Class last quarter focused on the importance of character education throughout the building and community.
They created bulletin boards, handed out positive quotes to their fellow peers, and promoted caring, respect, and responsibility. To demonstrate
CARING the students decided to cater a lunch for the Hillsboro Food Panty. They made a grocery list, shopped, and prepared a lunch for the
volunteers. The reason for choosing the food pantry was that they are always giving their services and they wanted to give back to such a well
deserving group of people. Sierra Clagett quoted,” Through Character Counts, I gained a new way of looking at service learning and how
impactful a few people can be.” Jacob Douglas
“I feel more prepared for the real-world since being at the Alt School for the last two years. I’ve grown up so much here and I want all of the faculty and staff to know
how truly thankful I am.” –Jon Bolen
Ms. Leigh’s Service Learning class is getting off to a busy start. They have been diligently working on the Nature Trail at the Primary Building. They also will partake in
numerous campus and community clean-ups. The class will also host a variety of guest speakers this quarter. Jefferson College, ITT, Rankin, National Academy of
Beauty Arts, and other business owners around the community will be invited to speak with our Seniors and Juniors to education and expose the students about future
careers and college choices.
Mrs. Herrmann’s Art Class created a variety of artwork. They made paper mache antlers, kinetic sculptures, lenticular art, macramé, and dream catchers. The students
enjoyed this class and the creative freedom it allowed them to have. This quarter they will be constructing and designing birdhouses. Other projects this quarter will be
scratch art, grid art, and jewelry. Commuter Applications class was able to develop and present a custom music video. Tim Avis quoted, “If it wasn’t for the Alternative
Program I would not have stayed in school. Without the help of my teachers, administration, and my own self-motivation I would have dropped out. Thank you to all of the
faculty and staff”
Ms. Leigh would like to send a GIGANTIC THANK YOU to Ms. Mandy Milner as the roving photographer of the Alternative School. She exemplifies the model student
and is always willing to give a helping hand! (continued on back page)

Read with a Hero Night
On Thursday, March 1st, the Primary hosted their annual Read with a Hero Night in conjunction with Dr. Seuss’s birthday. As the students arrived in their pajamas they
were greeted by The Cat and the Hat and Grinch to receive a gift. Once inside the building the students could go to the classrooms for a night of family reading fun. In their
classrooms, the students and their guests were treated to cookies, juice, and a free book. Each classroom teacher had their doors decorated with a Seuss theme. They
looked seusstastic! This year’s HERO readers included the Mayor, Local Firefighters & Police Officers, Military Personnel, Nurses, Business Professionals, and our
own, Mrs. Litterst, Mrs. Steighorst, and Dr. John Koeneker. The grand finale was held in the gym and featured songs led by music teachers, Sherry Francis and Colissa
Alexander. A great way to end the night! Students that brought books to donate to Metro Vision Ministries in House Springs were placed in a drawing for lunch with the
principals. The winners were Mikalyn Holt, Madison Buckley, and Wesley Spillman. Thanks to Stacy Thompson & Barb Miller and their committee for a wonderful night
of reading with our Heroes.

PIONEER DAYS
Mrs. Casey and Mrs. Elias-Browns 4th graders celebrated Pioneer Day on Wednesday, February 22, 2012. The students reenacted a day in the life of a pioneer child.
They dressed as pioneers, packed a pioneer lunch that we ate in the classroom, played pioneer games, and enjoyed a pioneer snack of corn bread and homemade butter.
The students made the butter.
Prior to Pioneer Day, we had been studying early Missourians way of life. The things we learned about pioneers and their way of life really helped us to truly reenact
their ways for the day. The following article was written by Hannah Watson, Samantha Barrentine, and Mrs. Casey, with help from the class. Hannah surveyed the
class to assist with writing the article. She asked the following questions: “What did you learn about pioneers?” and “What was your favorite part of Pioneer Day?”
Pioneers had a different life style. They had a much harder life than we do today. Pioneers did not have all the tools or machinery we have today. Pioneers had to make
or produce everything. They had to make their own clothing, build their homes from logs, plant crops and raise animals for food. They even had to make their own butter!
It was not easy! (continued on page 8)

We are also working on Egyptian collars. These were worn by the Egyptians who

Next, we are working on a flower still life inspired by Vincent Van Gogh.
Fourth grade classes just finished making textured books. We embossed metal

by collecting over $3,000. Each
student who collected $5 was
randomly selected to participate in
a dodge ball tournament. The winner
from each grade formed a team to play
against the teachers. Everyone knows
who really won!
The male and female fifth and
sixth graders who raised the
most money were able to dye or cut a teachers hair for
their generous donations. For fifth grade, Faith Wilson,
Abby Schact, and Ryan Mayberry were our highest
donators; for sixth grade, the students were John Gills
and Abbie Farwig. These students were able to cut Mr.
Price and Ms. Huston’s hair and dye Ms. Bourbon, Ms.
Martin, and Ms. Brooks’ hair in front of their perspective
peers. They were enjoying every minute of it!!
Since our goal was reached, selected teachers and the two
principals will be sleeping on the Intermediate roof for a
night. Date is TBD…..The students are already looking
forward to next years competition. Mr. Gordon wants to
thank all the helpers who made our Dodge ball for Heart
day a success and for all who donated money to help fight
heart disease.

SMOKE FREE JEFFERSON COUNTY VFW Essay Contest
Each year, Mr. Dave Morgan works with instructors at Hillsboro Junior

the true meaning of patriotism. This year, seventh grade students were
given the writing prompt, “Are You Proud of Your Country?” It was the
beginning of their personal journey of discovery. This prompt caused them
to pause and really think about this country and what this country means
to them on a personal level.

Hillsboro Jr. High Archery Club:
The Hillsboro Archery Team had a successful year. Practices began in September and concluded with the state
tournament on March 24. In early September, a meeting was held for all kids interested in archery. Permission slips
were due the next day and those who turned them in were immediate club members. They would be required to attend
a minimum of fifteen practices before they could attend the state tournament in March. Thirty practices were split up
with most directly after school, some later in the evenings, and a few before school. Most members attended well over
their fifteen required practices and an impressive number even attended the 6:20 AM practices. That’s dedication!
Practices focused on technique and accuracy but often concluded with fun shooting time at balloons, paper animal
targets, or 3-D deer targets.
The team had three evening competitions in which the archers competed against each other for score and prizes. The
competitions consisted of shooting two ends of five arrows from ten meters and two ends from fifteen meters. The top
ten archers received prizes and the top three archers also received individual medals. Parents generously contributed

highlight was Gabby Cervantes taking a forth place trophy in the middle school girls division with a score of 253.
A month later the Hawks archers competed in the State Tournament in Warrensburg, MO. Thirty-three Hillsboro archers competed against 397 others in the middle
school division. At the end of the day, the Hawks archers placed ninth out of twenty-one teams with an overall score of 2,976 points. What a great finish for the first
ever State Tournament attended by the Hawks! The individual highlight was Michaela Theiss shooting a massive 267 points and placing fifth in the state in the middle

Having taught twenty-seven years and counting, Lisa earned her Bachelor’s of Music Education from Southeast Missouri State
University. She began her teaching career down Highway 21 at Potosi HS where she taught for nine years. Traveling up the
highway, much closer to home, Lisa began her tenure at Hillsboro in 1994.
Lisa’s favorite teaching moments is seeing the fruits of her labors onstage, and her most memorable moment is watching her students
perform on the stage at Disney World, Florida.
Lisa has always been very fortunate to teach straight music: a cappella choir, swing choir, men’s and women’s choir and mixed
chorus. This has allowed Lisa to hone her piano abilities and pass on her love for music to many students who have entered or who
are considering going into music education.
Lisa is widely traveled, visiting many states including Florida, Colorado, Tennessee, Montana, Georgia, West Virginia, New York, South Carolina, North Carolina,
Illinois, Washington and Alabama. She has toured with her students to Florida, Georgia, Branson MO, and while at Potosi HS, the Bahamas.
Lisa has been married to Kevin Finch for twenty-nine years, and has two lovely and talented daughters. Jordan is 23 and a 2001 graduate of HHS; she has graduated
from McKendree University with a major in biology, and minors in chemistry and bio-chemistry. She is currently working on a master’s degree at SIUE. Taylor is
20, and a 2010 graduate of HHS; she is currently enrolled in the nursing program at Jefferson College and will graduate this May with her RN degree.
Lisa’s next step is retirement where she wants to spend time with her family friends…although she threatens to retire from HHS, her students keep her busy and
excited for the next musical challenge … truly a life well fulfilled!
