Activity 4.3 Central Tendency and Variability Measures 1

The document provides 3 problems to calculate measures of central tendency and variability from data sets. The first problem calculates the mean, median, and mode of monthly dues for a cooperative. The second finds the range and variance for test scores of 3 students. The third calculates the standard deviation of incorrect answers on a math test for 20 students.

Activity 4.3 Central Tendency and Variability Measures

Direction: Solve the following problems as indicated.

1. USTP employees have the following monthly dues in thousand pesos to their cooperative: 10,
40, 5, 20, 10, 25, 50, 30, 10, 5, 15, 25, 50, 10, 30, 5, 25 and 45. Find the mean, median and mode.

Mean: 22.7
Median: 22.5
Mode: 10

2. Three students are named finalists in the search for A-1 Student of the Year. The evaluation
papers revealed the following scores of the students in five different areas: Solve for the range
and variance.
Student A 97 92 96 95 90
Student B 94 94 92 94 96
Student C 95 94 93 96 92

  Range = HV-LV
=97-90
=7

xi 1 410
Data xi-x (xi-x)^2 X= n = 15 =94 where n is 15
97 3 9
92 -2 4
Therefor the mean is 94
96 2 4
95 1 1 Solving for variance
90 -4 16
94 0 0
94 0 0
92 -2 4
94 0 0
96 2 4
95 1 1
94 0 0
93 -1 1
96 2 4
92 -2 4

3. The number of incorrect answers on a true-or-false mathematics proficiency test for a random
sample of 20 students was recorded as follows: Solve for the standard deviation.
3 3 5 6 1 2 1 4 4 5
1 3 2 5 4 4 5 1 2 3

4. Which group is the most heterogeneous?

Group I scores 100 123 122 150 146 141 132 132
Group II scores 102 102 132 154 124 136 25 135
Group III scores 150 120 130 114 112 105 136 104
