Brother Thomas’ key points

[1] “a partial and primary restoration

of the Jews before the manifestation”

[2] “return in unbelief”

[3] “the hope of ultimately

establishing their commonwealth”

The First Aliyah

“Do you really think that my sole
motivation in coming here is to better
myself …. No. My ultimate aim, like that of
many others, is greater, broader,
incomprehensible but not unattainable.
The final goal is eventually to gain a
control of Palestine and to restore the
Jewish people the political independence
of which it has been deprived for two
thousand years.”
(Vladimir Dubnow, 1882)

First Zionist Congress, Basle,
Switzerland in 1897
“Were I to sum up the Basle Congress in a
word - which I shall guard against
pronouncing publicly - it would be this: ‘At
Basle, I founded the Jewish State.’ If I said
this out loud today, I would be answered
by universal laughter. If not in 5 years,
certainly in 50, everyone will know it.”

Brother John Thomas (in 1849)

“They [Israel] will emigrate

thither as agriculturists and
traders, in the hope of
ultimately establishing their
commonwealth … under the
efficient protection of the
British power.”
22
“I know not whether the men, who at present
contrive the foreign policy of Britain, entertain the
idea of assuming the sovereignty of the Holy Land,
and of promoting its colonization by the Jews; their
present intentions, however, are of no importance
one way or the other, because they will be
compelled, by events soon to happen, to do what,
under existing circumstances, heaven and earth
combined could not move them to attempt … The
finger of God has indicated a course to be pursued
by Britain which cannot be evaded, and which her
counsellors will not only be willing, but eager to
adopt when the crisis comes upon them.”

THE APOSTLE PAUL’S APPEAL TO
THE JEWS IN ROME (ACTS 28:20)
Brother C. C. Walker
Brother C. C. Walker (in 1898)
“The Jewish Congress in Switzerland is the
most considerable of recent events bearing
on the signs of the times ... The movement
among the Jews for their re-occupation of
Palestine as a nation, occupies the first place
among the signs of the times … There have
been many promising little steps in that
direction since the Crimean War, resulting in
the formation of Jewish colonies in the Holy
Land, and in the influx of a large Jewish
population into Jerusalem ...
Brother C. C. Walker (in 1898)
... But it has always been felt that there was
nothing on a scale answering to the
requirements of Ezekiel 38. It is very different
with the measure now in contemplation. If
realised, it will soon present us with the
prophet’s picture of Israel’s long desolate
mountains repeopled, in preparation for the
sublime events to follow ...”

(From The Christadelphian, 1898, pp. 47-48, 114)

Brother John Carter
Brother John Carter (in 1948)
“‘In that day will I raise up the
tabernacle of David that is fallen, and
close up the breaches thereof; and I will
raise up his ruins, and will build it as in
the days of old; that they may possess
the remnant of Edom ...’ The words
from Amos 9:7-15 were the prophetical
reading in the synagogues on Sabbath,
on May 15, 1948 ...
... A few hours earlier the rebirth of the State of
Israel had been proclaimed in Palestine where
the Jews were fighting for their existence
against ‘the remnant of Edom’ and the children
of Ishmael. And though the ‘tabernacle’ will be
raised by a greater ‘David’ than David Ben-
Gurion (the new State’s Prime Minister) the
emergence of the people as a nation once
more is a sign of the Messiah’s approach, for it
is one stage more in the reintegration of the
‘dry bones’ of Israel.”
(From The Christadelphian, 1948, page 103)
Declaration Of Independence

Israeli declaration, 14 May 1948

“Impelled by this historic and traditional

achievement, Jews strove in every successive
generation to re-establish themselves in their
ancient homeland. In recent decades they
returned in their masses. Pioneers, immigrants,
coming in defiance of restrictive legislation –
and defenders ...”

Declaration Of Independence

Israeli declaration, 14 May 1948
“ ... they made deserts bloom, received the
Hebrew language, built villages and towns,
and created a thriving community, controlling
its own economy and culture, loving peace
but knowing how to defend itself, bringing
the blessings of progress to all the country’s
inhabitants, and aspiring towards
independent nationhood.”
