INTRODUCTION

1). BACKGROUND

In English, it functions as a liaison between object and subject. in

Indonesian to be (is, are, was, were and others) means "is" or has
no meaning at all. Literally, to be means there is or is.

Although very few, but To Be or also known as verbs are used

very often, for example in nominal sentences. This may be unique
for students in Indonesia, because in Indonesian we do not
recognize auxiliary verbs such as To Be. Therefore, it seems very
important for us to learn and recognize and use To Be in English. To
be or verb be be can be changes according to the time and also the
verb aspect of a sentence. This means that To Be differs from one
sentence to another depending on whether the sentence is in the
present, past, or future tense, and also whether the sentence is
simple, perfect, or continuous. In addition, ToBe will also change
according to the subject sentence.

THEORY AND DISCUSION

1). Understanding TO BE

To be means the link between the subject and the predicate in

English sentences. To be in English has various meanings. In a
sentence, to be can be interpreted is and sometimes has no
meaning at all. In simple terms, it can also be interpreted as an
auxiliary word. In order to be classified as a main verb and auxiliary
verb. Main verb is the main verb in a sentence or can be said as the
core of a sentence. To be categorized as a main verb if it meets a
noun, adjective, or adverb. Auxiliary verbs are verbs that help the
main verb (main verb) to form a complete sentence structure. The
main characteristic of auxiliary verbs is that they cannot stand alone
in a sentence, but require a main verb. Works as an auxiliary verb if
it meets verb + ing or verb III (past participle).

Determined into two determined forms, namely being now (present)

and being in the past (past). To be present is used to express
ongoing activities or activities that are habitual. To be past is used to
express a final activity or an activity whose frequency is less
frequent.

To be used in sentences may differ depending on the subject used

or the adverb of time used in the sentence. To clarify the use of
these two forms, consider the following table:

Pattern

Present : S + to be (am/is/are)

Past : S + to be (was/were)
