CE 620A: STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS
ASSIGNMENT # 6
(Due November 14, 2022)
1. Two wooden blocks of mass 5 kg and 3 kg, respectively, are restrained by a system of springs
and linear dashpots, as shown in the following figure. A bullet of mass 0.2 kg is fired at a speed
of 20 m/s and embeds itself into block B. Determine the resulting motion of the system.
2. An accelerometer consists of moving mass m is placed inside a rigid box of mass M. The
mechanism inside the box can be represented by a restraining spring of stiffness k and a viscous
damper of coefficient c. The box is accidentally dropped from a height h. Derive expression for
the motion of the masses while in free fall.
3. Assume that the vibration shape of a beam shown the following figure is given by (x) = 1 +
d sin(x/L) where d is a constant. To satisfy all boundary conditions at the two ends of the
beam, an appropriate value of d needs to be assumed. Using the resulting value of d and (x),
obtain the fundamental frequency and the corresponding mode shape.
4. A uniform circular shaft of length L has a mass moment of inertia per unit length I0 and a polar
moment of inertia J as shown in the following figure. It is clamped at its left end and is rigidly
attached at the right end to a uniform flywheel of mass M1 and radius R. A mass M2 is suspended
by an inextensible massless string wound around the flywheel. Obtain the equation of motion
and the boundary conditions for torsional vibrations of the shaft. The shear modulus is G.
5. The mode shapes and frequencies of a three-story frame are shown on the following figure. The
story masses are also indicated. The second floor of the frame is pulled out to the right a distance
of 1.5 cm and then suddenly released. Determine the subsequent motion of the frame. Assume
5% of critical damping in each of the 1st and 3rd modes.

6. For the beam shown in the following figure, the spring stiffness k = 4EI/(2L3). Obtain the
frequency equation. By a graphical method or by trial and error, determine the fundamental
frequency. Plot the corresponding mode shape.
7. A simply supported beam of span L, mass per unit length m, and flexural rigidity EI vibrates
under the following support motion: both the left- and right-hand ends undergo identical lateral
motion given ug = A0 sint. Obtain the expressions for the displacement response of the beam.
8. A bar as shown in the following figure is vibrating in an axial direction under the action of a
constant axial force of magnitude P0 applied suddenly at a distance L from the fixed end. Obtain
an expression for the displacement response using the first two modes of vibration.
