THE RECENT FOOD PRICE HIKES IN THE PHILIPPINES

Inflation hurts consumers and vendors that brought a huge effect on their daily living

"Higher prices of vegetables, fruits, and rice (resulted from) lower production brought
about by the onslaught of typhoons and higher cost of inputs. Similarly, sugar
production is still reeling from the damage caused by recent typhoons,"
Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said.

The government raised its inflation projection for 2022 to 5.8 percent from the
previous assumption of 4.5 to 5.5 percent due to the persisting high prices of food and
transport costs, he added.

The sudden rising of inflation rate resulted to high prices of goods and vegetables has
brought so much effect to vendors.

“Maluya an bintahan yana tungod hini na sobra na pagtaas han mga presyo han
paraliton (due to the increase in the price of goods, earnings have become low),” said
Vicky Bornales, a vegetable vendor at the Pagsanghan Public Market.

“Limitado la kun mangompra man ak utanon ngan panakot (sibuyas, kamatis, lasona,
ngan luya), kay tungod nareklamo an mga mamaralit kay kamahal, danay damo an
nadudunot na mga paninda ko (I only buy limited vegetables and cooking ingredients
such as onions, tomatoes, garlic, and ginger, consumers complain because of their
high prices, sometimes many of my vegetables go bad),” she added.

Vicky said that she never expected that excessive increase in the price of goods.

"The sellers couldn't find supplies that they can sell at prices set by the executive
order," said Hector Salonga, vice president of the market's stall owner’s association.
“Although the economy has since opened up, vendors now contend with the problem
of food inflation. Food prices have generally gone up by 9.8% since last year, but the
prices of some commodities have risen even faster” – Rappler.com

The food prices increase directly rise household spending on food.

When inflation is low and prices are stable, the average Filipino is able to feel more
secure in investing money, knowing that it will remain stable over time. The impact of
price changes is captured by the price elasticity of poverty for three widely used
poverty measures, namely, headcount ratio, poverty gap ratio, and severity of
poverty. An empirically operational price index called the price index for the poor is
developed, which indicates whether the price changes hurt the poor relatively more
than the non-poor.

Mariz Merencillo, a consumer, said that when buying cooking ingredients and other
commodities, she prefers to buy smaller quantity of them.

“Sadto nakakapalit pa kami usa ka sako na bugas, ngan nahihimo ko pa magpalit

mga ka-kaylanganon ha balay pareho han mga groceries ngan mga lurutu-on, pati
mga panakot. Yana, tungod kay mahal naman an mga paraliton, limitado nala akon
gin papalit ngan danay di na gud ak napalit han mga paraliton na masyadp na maha
(Back then, I was able to buy a sack of rice, and I was able to buy necessities at
home such as groceries, dishes, and cooking ingredients. Now, because the goods
are expensive, I buy only a limited amount and sometimes I don't really buy goods
that are too expensive)”, she said.

Myrille May Bornales, a regular customer in Pagsanghan Public Market, noticed a big
difference between prices of goods between now and the past years.

“An 500 pesos ko hadto na budget, damo na akon napapalit,” she said.

“Mas makuri na yana pagkasyahon an budget para ha pan-adlaw-adlaw na ka-

mga pobrehanon la”, she added.

As inflation continuously climbing, poverty rate also rises. Sad to say, poor people are
those who suffers more. Filipino people putting their great hope to what the
government would do to find immediate solution and cut this inflation pressure in the
Philippines.
