What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written for the learners to provide a variety of
activities which will practice healthy lifestyle through fitness exercises and
activities. After going through this module, the learner is expected to:
1. engage in moderate to vigorous physical activities for at least 60 minutes a
day in and out of school. (PE10PF-llc-h-45/Week 1-4)

Active Recreation
1 (Fitness)
Engaging into active physical activities plays an important role in
maintaining overall fitness. Individual preference to achieve the desired level varies
in the extent of commitment of every individual who wants to gain and maintain
high fitness level. Good fitness program through different recreations can be a good
way to help you plan, monitor, improve and develop the level of fitness. Gradually
increasing of prescribed amount or dose of physical activities or exercise can be a
good start to measure the progress and changes of your fitness level. On the other
hand, recreational activities, weight maintenance and correct plan for workout with
right combinations of physical activities can also be an instrument to balance your
lifestyle and enjoy life.

What’s New

The idea of lifestyle, weight management, and physical activity shows important
connections in maintaining fitness. Different ways to remain fit and healthy are
commonly tried and enhanced to attain high fitness level. Uplifting fitness by
keeping ideal body weight and correcting plan for workout, combined with active
lifestyle, provide great opportunity to reach your goal of achieving fitness.

What is It

Active physical activities in a form of recreation to energize and relax one’s body
and mind are beneficial in maintaining fitness level. Being active and healthy help
prevent the occurrence of certain diseases brought about by unhealthy lifestyle.

Nowadays, student like you are fonder of doing unhealthy activities such as
excessive use of gadgets, playing online games, mingling with friends, and doing
activities that do not promote active lifestyle. This lesson will aid your
understanding on the importance of engaging different fitness programs and
recreational activities to attain healthy lifestyle.

Recreation - refers to an activity done for enjoyment during one’s leisure time or
when one is not working.
Recreational Activities - are activities often done for, enjoyment, and relaxation.
It is considered to be entertaining or pleasurable.

Active Recreational Activities - are activities that require active body


movements such as hiking, skating and playing sports- like volleyball and soccer
that refresh or restore one's strength.

Importance of Active Recreational Activities


 Physical Health: Recreational activity increases one’s stamina and energy
level. It does not only improve health like maintaining lower body fat
percentage and lowering blood and cholesterol level but also it increases
muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, body composition and
cardiovascular endurance.

 Mental Health: Recreational activity is a good way in managing stress. It


serves as an outlet for releasing boredom, anxiety and depression. It helps
improve emotional stability and self-esteem which can directly lessen
apprehension and despair; thus, it increases motivation to be more
productive and creative to do different activities. Mental health is vital for
overall physical health.

 Improved Quality of Life: People who are engage in recreation are more
expected to feel and enjoy productive life. Recreational activities help to
create a balance between daily routine pressure, work, and academic
stresses. The worth of active recreation is limitless if we look into it, in the
most important part which is improving fitness. Recreational activities
expand self-expression, self-fulfillment ability, physical strength, creative
expression, artistic sense and many more. This also comforts people to deal
with common day to day problems more effectively as it makes people more
optimistic.

 Promote overall fitness

For students like you, recreational activities will be a great help to manage the
setting brought about by modern technology and inactive lifestyle. By being
physically active, you will gain fitness that will help you enjoy a quality life.
Fitness- refers to the condition of being physically fit and healthy or being suitable
for a specific task or condition.
Physical Fitness – refers to the ability of your body system to work together
efficiently and perform activities of daily living without feeling too much fatigue.

Fitness is an important matter. It is not only a concern of the athletes, fitness


instructors or guru and sports enthusiasts but it must be everybody’s concern. As
a student, you need to take fitness into consideration to perform your daily
activities at home and in school. Your parents should also give importance on
fitness to address their daily tasks. In order to become a productive member of the
community, we must address our health concerns and promote active healthy
living which will begin in promoting fitness through different physical and active
recreational activities.

Good fitness programs are assembled on the principles of exercise that consider
safety protocols such as stretching and warm-up exercises to prepare the body
before the physical exertion or a performance. These principles and procedures will
help you to plan, monitor, improve and develop the correct pattern which is
necessary for safe, effective, and efficient execution of any workout for maximum
level of fitness.

ACTIVITY 2: Let Us Increase the Fitness Level

Always consider the following precautionary measures to stay safe and injury-
free in doing any active physical/recreational activity and workout.

 Wear proper and appropriate clothing for the activity.


 Do warm-up and stretching exercises before workout like arm and
shoulder rotation, jogging on the spot, lunge, and squats and also perform
cool down activities afterwards to avoid muscular injury.
 Always consider the FITT formula- frequency, intensity, time and type
of workout according to your physical needs and ability.
 Be conscious of your body. Think about the particular activity suited for
your health condition. (Ask for the health status of students. Identify
students with specific health problem/complication and advise them to
engage in light physical activities and exercises if they can.)

Directions: Create 3-5 minutes of Zumba fitness exercise using your favorite
music. You may ask your parents, siblings, and housemates to join you in this
