AIR POLLUTION AND PREVENTION

Pollution is the presence of any substance or materials that is harmful to our environment. These
harmful substances (solids, liquids and gases) are called pollutants, it can be either foreign materials or
naturally occurring contaminants. Environmental pollution can be caused both by natural events and
human activities. It damages the land, water, and air.

Air pollution is one of the classification and source of pollution. This problem has become a worldwide
phenomenon. Air pollution is the contamination of the indoor and outdoor environment by the mixture
or collection od additional loads of chemicals, physical, or biological agent that changes the natural
characteristics of the atmosphere.

Outdoor Air Pollution – is the presence of substances in the air at concentrations and duration above
naturals limits.

Major sources of Outdoor pollution:

 Burning of fossil fuels for power consumption

 Photochemical and industrial smog
 Volcanic eruptions which emit sulfur dioxide and suspended particulates
 Forest Fire, “Kaingin”, or the Fire and lightning
 Evaporation of volatile organic compounds from decaying organic matters
 Natural Radioactive 222-gas from uranium deposits

Nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and organic compounds can evaporate and enter atmosphere. These
are the chemical substances from varieties of sources that contributes to air pollution.

Indoor Air Pollution – it is a type of pollution created by the release of harmful pollutants inside or the
build up of chemicals inside the office, building, houses, school, commercial stores.

Major sources of Indoor Pollution:

 Tabacco products
 Cooking stoves
 Cleaning products
 Mold
 Fuel-burning combustion appliances
 Building materials and furnishings as diverse as:
o Newly installed flooring
o Cabinetry or furniture made of certain pressed wood products
 Central heating and cooling system and humidification devices
 Excess moisture
EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION

Effects on humans:

People are experiencing a wide range of health effects from being exposed to air pollution. It has
short-term and long-term effects.

Short-term effects:
o Pneumonia
o Bronchitis
o Irritation to the nose, eyes, or skin
o Headaches, dizziness, and nausea

Long-term effects:

o Heart disease
o Lung cancer
o Respiratory diseases
o It can damage the brain, kidneys, liver, and other organs
o Some scientists suspect air pollutants can cause birth defects.

Nearly 2.5 million people die around the world each from the effects of outdoor or indoor air pollution.

Effects on the Environment:

The entire ecosystems can suffer from the effects of air pollution like humans.

 Contaminates the body of water and soil. This kills the crops, young trees, and plants.
 Depletion of ozone layer
 Increase of global warming caused by “greenhouse effects”
 Animals can suffer health effects like birth defects, diseases, and lower reproductive rates

Air pollution – Solutions

It is necessary to reduce air pollution due to its disastrous effects. To accomplish this, the government,
scientists, and environmentalists are employing or testing a variety of pollution-reduction methods.
Here are the two main types air pollution control:

 Protect and promote the people’s right to a healthy and healthy ecosystem that is in tune with
the rhythm and harmony of nature.
 Recognize that cleaning the habitat and environment is primarily a localized responsibility;
 Recognize that a clean and healthy environment benefits everyone and should thus be
everyone’s concern.

Strategies/Approaches

 Burn less coal

 Lessen the impact of cars
 Take action within your community to find solutions to air pollution
 Monitor air quality warnings and take action on poor air quality days
 Use energy saving appliances
 Avoid the use of aerosls reduce dust by vacuuming regularly
 Plant trees
 Don’t smoke in public places
 Walk or take public transportation
 Report smoke-belchers to LTO, MMDS, and/or the appropriate local government units
