Assignment 3

(1) A cylindrical nickel alloy specimen with an original diameter of 10.2 mm and elastic modulus of 207 GPa will experience elastic deformation when subjected to a tensile load of 8900 N. Compute the maximum specimen length before 0.25 mm of deformation. (2) A steel bar 100 mm long with a 20 mm square cross section experienced 0.1 mm elongation under an 89,000 N tensile load. Calculate the steel's elastic modulus. (3) Solve mechanics of materials problems involving tensile testing of various metal specimens, determining properties like elastic modulus, yield strength, tensile strength, and ductility.

Assignment # 3

:Mechanical Properties
MENG 201: Materials Science
Semester I / 2022-23

A cylindrical specimen of a nickel alloy having an elastic modulus of 207 GPa

( psi) and an original diameter of 10.2 mm (0.40 in.) will experience only elastic
deformation when a tensile load of 8900 N (2000 lb ) is applied. Compute the
maximum length of the specimen before deformation if the maximum allowable
elongation is 0.25 mm (0.010 in.).

A steel bar 100 mm long and having a square cross section 20 mm on an edge is
pulled in tension with a load of 89,000 N, and experiences an elongation of 0.10
mm. Assuming that the deformation is entirely elastic, calculate the elastic
modulus of the steel.

(a) Plot the data as engineering stress versus engineering strain.

(b) Compute the modulus of elasticity.
(c) Determine the yield strength at a strain offset of 0.002.
(d) Determine the tensile strength of this alloy.
(e) What is the approximate ductility, in percent elongation?
(f) Compute the modulus of resilience.

1: A piece of copper originally 305 mm long is pulled in tension with a stress

of 276 MPa. If the deformation is entirety elastic, what will be the resultant
elongation? Modulus of elasticity of copper is 110 GPa.

2: A tensile stress is to be applied along the long axis of a cylindrical brass rod
that has a diameter of 10 mm. Determine the magnitude of the load required to
produce a 2.5x10-3 mm change in diameter if the deformation is entirely elastic.
(Poisson’s ratio of brass is 0.34 and modulus of elasticity is 97 GPa).

4: A cylindrical specimen of steel having an original diameter of 12.8 mm is

tensile tested to fracture and found to have an engineering fracture strength sf of
460 MPa. If its cross-sectional diameter at fracture is 10.7 mm, determine the
ductility in terms of percent reduction in area.

3: From the tensile stress-strain behavior for the brass specimen shown in
Figure below, determine the following:

a. The modulus of elasticity

b. The yield strength at a strain offset of 0.002
c. The maximum load that can be sustained by a cylindrical specimen
having an original diameter of 12.8 mm
d. The change in length of a specimen originally 250 mm long that is
subjected to a tensile stress of 345 MPa
