Semester-1
Unit-1
PPT-2
B.Voc Hardware and Networking
Peripheral devices
Mouse
⚫ pointing device.
⚫ Have round ball at its base which sense the
movement of the mouse and sends signal to the
CPU.
⚫ Mouse is present on the screen in the form of
arrow, known as cursor.
⚫ Contains 2-3 buttons to perform different
functions.
⚫ Mouse can be wired or wireless.
⚫ Allow us to create graphics on screen like lines,
curves, etc., make using menus, clicking on icons
easier.
⚫ Functions of mouse:
Click- to click on something with mouse, move to
cursor to the item and press the button once. It is
used to select any item or button on the screen.
Double click- press the button twice, it is used to
open a file, folder or an application.
Drag- Position the mouse over the item, them
press the button on the mouse and hold it down as
you move the mouse. It is used to change the
position of the screen or any item on the screen.
Right click- it means to press the right button of
the mouse. It is used to open the context menu.
Scroll- It is used to scroll the window vertically.
Types of mouse:
⚫ Mechanical mouse:
o Have a hard rubber ball that rolls as the mouse
is moved.
o Sensors inside the mouse body detect the
movement and translate it into information that
the computer interprets.
⚫ Optical mouse:
o Uses LED and Optical sensors instead of rubber
ball.
o Uses light to detect movement.
o More reliable and easy to use than mechanical
mouse.
o Donot require mouse pad.
⚫ Laser mouse:
o The laser mouse is also a kind of optical
mouse, and the working principals are also the
same.
o It also senses the movement by reflecting light,
a laser mouse uses a laser beam instead of an
LED.
o This basically allows the mouse to be used on
glass and plastic surfaces.
⚫ Wireless mouse:
o Wireless mouse transmit radio signals to a
receiver connected to your computer.
o The computer accepts the signal and decodes
how the cursor was moved or what buttons
were clicked.
o While the range of wireless models is
convenient, there are some drawbacks. The
decoding process, for instance, means that a
wireless mouse is generally not as responsive
to gestures as a wired mouse. This may
sometimes lead to lag.
Scanner
⚫ It is an input device.
⚫ Works like a photocopy machine.
⚫ Used to transfer text, photos to the
computer.
⚫ Translates a paper document into digital
image format that can be stored in
computer.
⚫ Types of scanner:
Flat-bed
Hand-held
Flatbed scanner:
⚫ It is like photocopy machine consisting of box
with glass plate on the top and a lid that covers
the plate.
⚫ Document to be scanned is placed upside down
on glass plate.
⚫ A light source, situated below the glass plate
once activated, moves horizontally from one end
to another. After scanning one line, the light
beam moves up a little and scans the next line.
The process is repeated for all lines.
Handheld Scanner:
⚫ Small handheld scanning device, that is
moved more the objects that need to be
scanned.
⚫ Has a set of LED encased in small case
that can be held in hand.
⚫ Used where high accuracy is not required.
⚫ Cheaper than flatbed scanner.
