Final Reflection

I have been working on my bachelor’s degree to become a bilingual teacher for

elementary students since 2018 and this is the first English class I have taken. Back in high

school, I was not the biggest fan of writing classes. English is my second language; my

vocabulary and grammar are not the best. Whenever I am assigned to write an essay, my head

hurts just thinking about it. Growing up I was judged badly because my essays tend to be

confusing. I like writing stories and I know my imagination is wild, however, I do not like

writing courses or the way our papers are graded.

When I first joined this class, I was nervous. I was not sure whether we had to share our

projects with our classmates, which I did not want. I always wonder how my professors are

going to be. The first day of class was enjoyable in a funny way. Long story short, my professor
did not get a classroom in time and had to teach from his car. It somehow made me less nervous.

We soon began our writing assignments. When I was first introduced to the Theory of Writing

project, I became intrigued. The topic I immediately chose was, “Is there a set of rules for all

good writing?” I wanted to investigate what is considered good writing and why.

The process of writing included revision and peer feedback. The feedback consisted of

reading aloud our essay to a small group of classmates and getting criticism to improve our

writing. It was not my favorite part of the course, I wouldn’t say I like getting feedback, even

though I know the importance of it. Most of my classmates, just as I thought, gave me criticism

that my essay was confusing or unorganized. A few of them gave me tips on how to improve my

writing structure, but others just said, “I did not understand,” without saying anything else. That

is probably the only thing I disliked when working on this project. With that being said, peer

feedback did help me a bit. When I write, I can get frustrated but communicating with my

classmates made me realize I was not the only one having issues with writing. Besides writing,

we also had to work on projects involving art and I found this helpful. It kind of took our minds

off writing while still working on our ToW. Being able to create something other than essays

was fun.
One thing that I learned in this class is that other people’s opinion does not define you.

Not everyone is going to like what I write and that is completely fine. I am not sure whether my

writing has improved but my confidence has. I can talk for hours about topics I have to write

about, and I also enjoy writing more, despite it being a challenge. This class has helped me lose

some fear when it comes to criticism. My biggest concern was that no one was able to

understand how I felt when it came to English courses, but I was relieved when I found out I was

not the only one. I am also going to start reading more because I agree with my professor that

you write what you read. I want to improve my vocabulary so that would help. I am going to

apply what I learned in this English class to future courses I need.
