Selected Response Assessment

The document provides information about an assessment for an 8th grade mathematics standard on functions. It includes the standard, instructional objectives, propositions, sample questions, and an answer key. The objectives are for students to define functions, graph functions, compare linear and nonlinear functions, and interpret the equation for a linear function. The assessment contains true/false, matching, short answer, and multiple choice questions to evaluate if students met the objectives.

Selected Response Assessment

Melinda M Ekstrand

Colorado Christian University

SELECTED RESPONSE 2

Colorado Academic Standard:

Mathematics: Standard 2. Algebra and Functions
Grade Level: 8th Grade

“Prepared Graduates” Will:

MP5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP7. Look for and make use of structure.
“Grade Level Expectation”
8.F.A. Functions: Define, evaluate, and compare functions.
“Evidence Outcome(s)”

1. Define a function as a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. Show that the
graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding
output.
2. Compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically,
graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions). For example, given a linear
function represented by a table of values and a linear function represented by an
algebraic expression, determine which function has the greater rate of change.
3. Interpret the equation y=mx+b as defining a linear function, whose graph is a straight
line; give examples of functions that are not linear. For example, the function A=s2
giving the area of a square as a function of its side length is not linear because its graph
contains the points (1,1), (2,4), and (3,9), which are not on a straight line.

Instructional Objectives:

1. Eighth grade students will be able to define a function using terms such as input and
output.
2. Eighth grade students will be able to graph a function
3. Eighth grade students will be able to correctly decipher between functions and
non-functions based on the number of outputs per input through graphing.
4. Eighth grade students will be able to compare functions when given their forms
algebraically, graphically, verbally, and numerically
5. Eighth grade students will be able to interpret the equation y=mx+b as a linear function
6. Eighth grade students will be able to define a linear function
7. Eighth grade students will be able to decipher between linear and nonlinear functions
SELECTED RESPONSE 3

8. Eighth grade students will be able to define a linear function, apply the concept to
decipher between linear and nonlinear graphs, and interpret the equation y=mx+b as the
equation of linear functions.

Instructional Propositions:

1. A function is an expression, rule, or law that defines a relationship between one variable
(the independent variable or input) and another variable (the dependent variable or
output).
2. An input is the independent variable of a function.
3. An output is the dependent variable of a function.
4. To graph a function, plot the inputs and outputs of the equation and connect the dots.
5. A graph is a function if it passes the straight line test.
6. A function can be evaluated by finding the inputs and outputs and looking for an overlap
when given the algebraic form.
7. A function can be evaluated by looking for an overlap in inputs or outputs when given the
numerical form or values.
8. A linear function is a mathematical function in which the variables appear only in the
first degree, are multiplied by constants, and are combined only by addition and
subtraction.
9. The graph of a linear function presents itself as a straight line.
10. A positive linear function increases y as x increases
11. A negative linear function decreases y as x increases.
12. The equation y=mx+b is the form of a linear function.
13. In the equation y=mx+b, m represents the slope of the line.
14. The slope of a line can be described as the rise and run of the line.
15. In the equation y=mx+b, b represents the y intercept of the line.
SELECTED RESPONSE 4

Brainstormed Questions:
