Introduction:
The middle latitude desert climate is also called as the temperate boreal desert climate the basic
difference between subtropical desert and the middle latitude desert lies in lower temperature.
Unlike the hot deserts have very cold winters.
Location:
All the middle latitude deserts of Northern Hemisphere are found in the low basin like areas in
the deep interior of continents partly surrounded by high lands. Tarim, Gobi, Dzungaria,
Russian Turkistan and central Iran all these deserts occupy the interior areas of Asia. These
deserts are found between 35o and 50o N and S in the united states of America such a type of
deserts occupies the Great Basin area. In southern Hemisphere the example of middle latitude
desert is Patagonia and South America.
Geographic distribution:
The middle latitude desert id found in inner Asia with great expenses in northern (Gobi desert)
and northwestern china (Talka Makan desert). The interior western United States (southern
Utah and Neveda, Arizona, New Mexico) has a middle latitude desert climate.
Characteristics:
The middle latitude desert climate is controlled by the same factor as tropical desert climate.
In united states middle latitude desert lies in a region where the high level subsidence
pronounced in the summer inhibits precipitation. In winter cold high pressure dominates the
region the middle latitude climate is found in Great Basin of United States here east facing
slopes on the see ward sides of mountain in rain shadow of westerly winds.
Winter precipitation(mm):58.6
Middle latitude desert enjoys a high %age of sunshine throughout the year. Dominate high
pressure and lack of moisture combine to inhibited the production of clouds there is large
temperature range in day and night .The southwestern desert of united state serve as a
source region for cT air only during summer because it is too cold to produce such an air
mass during winter.

Precipitation:
The middle latitude desert is considered an arid climate in which total annual precipitation is
less than half annual potential evapotranspiration precipitation is sparse as the interior location
is distant from a source of moisture lack of rainfall is due to leeward rainfall shadow location
precipitation does fall during the U.S southwest desert monsoon season in july and august as
Gulf air masses penetraets into this region. Combined with cyclonic presipitation during winter
middle latitude desert receives much more precipitation than its tropical counterpart.
