Simple, Compound & Complex
There is another name for a simple sentence, and that is an independent clause.
Compound sentence:
Compound sentence is just a sentence thathas two independent clauses
(Or) sometimes more independent clause.
I am a teacher.
My wife is a lawyer. (We can see two separate independent clauses or simple sentences)
Instead we can combine them likethis: I am a teacher, and my wife is a lawyer. (we have one compound
sentence with the two independent clause connected by the conjunction “and”)
Examples:
1. She tried to lift the suitcase. The suitcasewas too heavy.
A. She tried to lift the suitcase, but it was too heavy. (“it” is a pronoun using that’s instead of
noun.)
2. He didn’t have enough cash. He paid by credit card.
A. He didn’t have enough cash, so he paid by credit card.
3. Wecan take a bus to the museum. Wecan just walk there.
A. We can take a bus to the museum or we can just walk there.
Now the connecting words that you see in these examples, “and”,“but”, “so”,“or” etc. These words
are called co-coordinating conjunctions.
That connecting two independent clauses. When we connect the two independent clauses, we
put a comma after the first clause.

Complex sentence
When I got home from work yesterday, (so this thought is not complete)- so it is not independent
clause. This type of clause is called a dependentclause.
Tomake it a complete sentence, you have to add an independent clause.
For example: When I got home from work yesterday, I watched TV for an hour. (So, you see that there
is a dependent clause and an independent clause, now it is a complete sentence.)
This type of sentence is called a complex sentence.
A complex sentence has a dependent clauseand an independent clause.
1. When I got home from work yesterday, I watched TV for an hour.
2. I love to travel because I get to meet a lot of interesting people.
(In sentence one, we saw that the dependent clause came first, and here in number two, the
dependent clause comes second.)
In complex sentences, you can put the clauses inany order, that’s no problem.
Examples:
Even though the exam was quite difficult, all the students passed.
Youcan’t go out and play, until you’ve finished your homework.
