05 LabExercise 1

This document provides instructions for students to construct a basic company network architecture. It specifies that the network should include one network category based on geography and one network topology. As an example, the summary provides: - A local area network (LAN) used within a corporate building, using a star topology where each device connects to a central hub. - A brief description of the LAN architecture, including how it connects to the internet via a router, uses switches for efficient data delivery, and connects various devices via Ethernet or WiFi.

BSIT-1A
INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING
Objective:
At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to construct a basic networking
architecture.
Instructions:

• Create a simple company network architecture with proper labeling using any
online network diagram tools below.
• Base the network architecture on the following pointers:
o One (1) network category based on geography
o One (1) network topology
• Using MS Word, describe the network architecture in no less than five (5) sentences by
highlighting the pointers. Save in PDF format and attach the screenshot/link of the
network in the same file.

Answer:
One (1) network category based on geography:
• This Network Category based on Geography is a Local Area Network (LAN), which is
used to interconnect and share computer resources in an establishment such as a
corporate building, house, or several buildings in a limited area.
One (1) network topology:
• This is a Star network topology where it’s the most common network topology, star
topology connects each device in the network to a central hub. Devices can only
communicate with each other indirectly through the central hub.
Explanation:
• The simplest Internet-connected LANs require only a router and a way for computing
devices to connect to the router, such as via Ethernet cables or a WIFI hotspot. LANs
without an Internet connection needs a switch for exchanging data. Large LANs, such as
those in a large office building, may need additional routers or switches to forward data to
the right devices.
• Most LANs connect to the Internet at a central point: a router. Home LANs often use a single
router, while LANs in larger spaces may additionally use network switches for more efficient
packet delivery.
• A variety of devices can connect to LANs, including servers, desktop computers, laptops,
printers, IoT devices, and even game consoles. In offices, LANs are often used to provide
shared access to internal employees to connected printers or servers.
• LANs almost always use Ethernet, WIFI, or both in order to connect devices within the
network. Ethernet is a protocol for physical network connections that requires the use of
Ethernet cables. WIFI is a protocol for connecting to a network via radio waves.
Internet
• The Internet is known as the “interconnection of computer networks”. The Internet is a
massive network of networks. It connects millions of computers together globally, forming
a network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as
they are both connected to the Internet.
Router and Servers
• A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer
networks. Routers perform the traffic-directing functions on the Internet. Data sent
through the internet, such as a web page or email, is in the form of data packets.
• It provides resources, data, services, and programs to other computers or clients over a
network. It is tasked to handle complex operations such as databases, emails, and
shared files.
