Samar Island in the Philippines contains over 335,000 hectares of protected areas that are home to diverse flora and fauna. These include lowland rainforests populated by trees like Dipterocarps and endangered species such as the Philippine Eagle. The 94 protected areas on Samar Island and elsewhere are important not just for preserving biodiversity, but also natural resources and marine ecosystems like coral reefs. It is the responsibility of environmental agencies and local communities to ensure these protected areas and the species that rely on them are conserved for future generations.

Narrator: Samar Island is home to many protected areas which houses different types of

flora and fauna species respectively. A land which contains 335,106 hectares of
luscious rainforests as stated in the video presentation. The key thing that I realized in
watching the videos were these species thriving in these particular sections of the
island. Dipterocarps are a family of flora that exists in low-land rainforest trees which is
what the Samar Island is known for according to the video, a land filled with low-land
rainforests that are devoid of mountains. Fauna species such as the Philippine Eagle
also thrives in luscious rain forests. Upon looking further in the videos, I also realized
that the fate of these protected lands fall under our responsibility as the caretakers to
make sure that these lands are well balanced and protected in order to save the lives of
different species that lives in these protected areas not just in Samar Island but also the
other “94 protected areas” according to the video. These islands are not just protected
because of its species but also its resources like the Calbayog Pan-as Hayiban
Protected landscape or The Calbayog water shed, Biri Larosa Protected Landscape and
Seascape, and the GUIUAN MARINE RESOURCE PROTECTED LANDSCAPE AND
SEASCAPE. These lands also houses not only marine life but also marine ecosystems
like the coral reefs I realized then and there that these islands that are mentioned are
protected for what they have, ranging from fauna and flora species to quality resources,
marine life and marine ecosystems and it is the responsibility of the people like the
DENR to make sure these islands are protected for what these islands have that can be
of benefit to the people and other species that live with us.
