WARNING THIS INSTRUMENT IS MAINS OPERATED. POTENTIALLY LETHAL VOLTAGES ARE PRESENT INSIDE THE CASE. BEFORE OPENING THE CASE, DISCONNECT THE SUPPLY BY REMOVING THE MAINS CABLE FROM THE REAR PANEL SOCKET. N.B. THIS INSTRUMENT MUST BE EARTHED INTRODUCTION lease read all of this instruction manual before operating this occur, are caused by incorrect operation. instrument, as most faults that ‘The Jupiter 2000 function generator is a general purpose signal source capable of producing Sine, ‘Square, Triangle and TTL waveforms between 0.2Hz and 2MHz, with an amplitude of up to 20V p-p. ‘The switched attenuator and rotary amplitude control allows control of the output amplitude down to mV levels. Frequency control is by seven switched decade ranges and a calibrated 10:1 rotary vernier. Versatility is enhanced by the provision of separate 502 and 6000 outputs, a fully variable + 10V offset ‘control with centre off position, a variable symmetry control and an external sweep input EMC COMPATIBILITY: This insirument complies with ENSOOBI-1 and ENSOO82-1 for emission and immunity. If the instrument is operated in the presence of electromagnetic or electrostatic interference some degradation in performance may occur. Ifthe source of interference is removed the performance will return to that given in the specification POWER REQUIREMENTS and FUSE REPLACEMENT ‘Phe Jupiter 2000 is designed to operate frou a supply voltage of 200-264V @ 48.62Hz. The power consumption of the instrament is nominally 25VA. ‘The mains fuse is located in the fuse compartment of the rear panel I.E.C. socket. The correct fuse for 200-264V operation is 20mm anti-surge 250mA. ‘There is provision in the fuscholder for a spare fuse. For conversion to 100-120¥ operation please refer to the service Manual CONTROLS 1. Power ON-OFF switch (rear panel) When the on/off switch is set to the ON’ position, mains power is supplied to the instrument and the front panel display is illuminated. Note that this switch provides double pole isolation of the incoming mains supply. 2. Runetion ‘The function switch selects which waveform is in use at the S0@ and 6000 outputs. For correct operation only one of the Sine, Triangle and Square buttons should be depressed. 3. Frequency Range(Hz) ‘The frequency range switchbank enables the user to select one of the seven decade frequency anges between IIlz and IMHz, The desired frequency range is selected by pressing the appropriate frequency range pushbutton. Note: The seven pushbuttons are interlocking and attempting to select more than one frequency will lead to an inaccurate output frequency. 4. Frequency (rotary control) ‘The Frequency control has a calibrated scale from 0.2 to 2.0 enabling the user to vary the output frequency over a range of 10:1 within the selected frequency range. The major scale divisions are in steps of 0.1 which are subdivided by steps of 0.05.5. Amplitude ‘The amplitude control allows continuous adjustment of the output amplitude from 0 to the ‘maximum open circuit output amplitude of > 20Vp-p. The control is linear, s0 for example ‘when it is set to the mid point the output amplitude is one half of the maximum. Both the 50 and the 6002 outputs are effected by the amplitude control, Attenuator ‘The attenuator is operated by depressing the appropriate switch of the 3-way interlocking switchbank. The three attenuator settings are OdB, -204B and -40dB giving maximum open cirouit output amplitudes of >20Vp-p, >2Vp-p and >0.2Vp-p. Both the S0@ and 6000 outputs are effected by the attenuator. 7. Symmetry When the SYM (F10) button is depressed the rotary SYMMETRY control allows the symmetry of the selected waveform to be varied over a range of approximately 8:1. The effect of the symmetry control with the 3 waveforms is shown in Fig 1. Note: When the symmetry function is selected the output frequency is divided by a factor of, approximately 10. MIN CENTRE MAX SMV. SIN ININ AN SIN KIX Fig. 1 8. Offset ‘The offset control allows the D.C component of the output waveform to be varied over a range of <-10V to >+10V, The offset control has a centre ‘click’ position defined by a marker, With the control set to this position the output offset voltage is essentially OV: however, a small offset voltage may still be present which is dependent upon the amplitude setting. If this residual voltage 1s stil too high, then the offset control should be adjusted as necessary whilst monitoring the output with a voltmeter Note: The peak output amplitude + D.C. offset is limited to 10V peak and clipping of the output waveform may result if this limit is exceeded OUTPUTS The function generator has 3 signal outputs; 50, 6000 and TTL. The accuracy of the indicated impedance is 1%. The. TTL output 1s a square wave with the rising edge coincident withthe peak of the waveform present atthe 500 and 6000 outputs. The TTL output voltage level is compatible with the input of all the TTL families available, and is capable of driving at least 20 standard TTL. inputs. All outputs are protected against short circuit. WARNING Do not connect external voltage sources io the TTL output as this may cause permanent damage to the instrument and invalidate the guarantee.INPUTS ‘Sweep Input ‘The sweep input allows wide-band frequency sweeping (and narrow-band frequency or phase ‘modulation of the outputs. Fig. 2 shows the specification limits of the sweep input. ‘The required input voltage for a given frequency is determined by the following equation:- F Vin=a[- FS) RSI Where VIN = The voltage at the sweep input (V) ‘The output frequency (Hz) FR = The selected frequency range (Hz) FS = The frequency control setting (0.2 to 2.0) FREQUENCY V SWEEP VOLTAGE iow FREDUENCY LINDT ALL RANGES ExcerT FR = ine a2 SETTING, FS 2 @---MIGH FREQUENCY CIMT FR = ani gucer cin | FR ime, 10H NX ocean w eee siz ie 8-5 SHEEP VOLTAGE Uy Fig. 2 Fig. 2 provides a convenient method for approximating the sweep range for a given input voltage swing. For example, to estimate the required sweep input voltage swing to give a 4:1 sweep rato from 10kHz to 40kHz using the 10kHz frequency range with the frequency control setting (FS) at 2.0:{First calculate the Y values from the equation Y = F/FR Y1 = 40kH2/10kHz = 4.0 Y2 = 10kH2/10kHz = 1.0 ii) Find the intercept of Y1 and Y2 with FS = 2.0 iii) Read off V1 and V2 from the sweep voltage scale; Vi = 9.6, V2 = +48 Notes ‘When using the extemal sweep facility always aim to obtain a sweep input voltage that is approximately symmetrical about zero volts; this will ensure maximum linearity and minimum frequency jitter. ii) The low frequency 1000:1 sweep limit occurs when Y= 004, PERATING EXAMPLE ‘The following example illustrates how to set up the function generator to produce an ontput waveform with a given amplitude, frequency and D.C. offset. e.g. Set the output to produce a 1kHz triangle waveform with an amplitude of 1Vp+ offset of + IV. and a D.C, (@ Set the rear panel ON/OFF switch to the ON position, Set the rear panel EXT/INT switch to the INT position. () Depress the \ pushbutton on the FUNCTION switchbank (ensure the SYM pushbutton is released), (©) Depress the 1kHz FREQUENCY RANGE pushbutton. (@) Rotate the FREQUENCY control to 1kHz. (©) Set the OFFSET control to the centre position. (Monitor the 50@ or 6008 output with an oscilloscope and adjust the AMPLITUDE control to give an output of 1Vp-p () Adjust OFFSET to give +1V offset. Note: To obtain minimum distortion and noise always use the lowest possible attenuator setting when adjusting the output amplitude. JSE OF CABLES Note that all the BNC sockets on the function generator are S00 types. The only input or output where load matching is desirable is the TTL output. This of course does not have a characteristic impedance, so all the leads from this output should be kept short as practical, to avoid capacitive loading, ringing and other unwanted transmission line effects. If ringing does occur on the TTL output it can lead to similar distortions on the other outputs. MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR If the instrument requires cleaning use only a damp, NOT wet lint free cloth. DO NOT use solvents 1s they may damage the instrument case oF front pane! The manufacturer, or their appointed agents overseas, will repair and calibrate any instrument developing a faut. If you consider that the instrument has developed a fault please thoroughly read the instruction manual, checking your operating procedures. If you still feel the instrument is faulty, retum it to the manufacturer or agent, observing the following points: 1. Clearly detail the claimed fault. 2 Do NOT retum any accessories. 3 Pack the product very carefully. Wherever possible retain the original packaging for 5this purpose 4. Enclose dated proof of purchase. ‘Where owners wish to undertake their own repairs and calibration, this should be carried out by skilled personnel, with access to precision equipment, working in conjunction with the Service Manual which can be purchased from the manufacturer or their overseas agents. CALIBRATION Calibration of the function generator is a complex procedure and requires the use of specialised test ‘equipment. It is recommended that calibration should only be carried ont by experienced electronic technicians. A service manual is available giving full details of the required equipment and procedures. GUARANTEE BLACK STAR LTD will undertake to repair, free of charge, any product that fails within 12 months of the date of purchase provided that the equipment has not been modified or misused. Note this guarantee does not affect your statutory rights,Ref: 731-053 Issue: 2 Date: 05 January 1997
