Reflection

This semester of English was a major difference from the high school to college level.

Not only the level of difficulty but the change of having an asynchronous class. In highschool,

there was a period of time where we had online classes but the actual class was just surface level

material. These changes taught me how to better work with others because the assignments were

as a group. The semester was divided into three major modules with a certain amount of weeks

where we would get readings and videos to teach about the assignments and to have discussions

as well. Through the weeks I was able to better find reliable resources and be able to utilize them

to describe a specific topic. For this reflection, I will talk about two assignments during the

school that were a literature review and annotated bibliography.

The first major assignment I will discuss will be the literature review. The purpose of a

literature review is to be able to use scholarly sources to describe a topic. We had to pick 12

reliable sources and use them to describe "How Head Trauma and Sports Affect Cognitive

Function". As a group we decided on this topic because two members from our english group

chose that topic for their seminar symposium. This was something completely new to me and I

had to be able to find sources and learn to paraphrase each source in a college level standard.

The second major assignment I will be discussing is the annotated bibliography. The

purpose of this was to be able to find reliable sources for our literature review but to also write a

brief explanation over each source to show understanding of each source. Finding one reliable

scholarly journal that dealt with our topic "How Head Trauma and Sports Affect Cognitive

Function" was hard and we had to find 12. In our english group we split the work by each

finding sources and explaining each one of them in a google document and with each other. This
was also something brand new for me because in high school we just found random sources on

the internet that dealt with our topic.

In conclusion, English 1301 has taught me many things that have helped me improve as a

writer such as better paraphrasing and the skills to find sources. I will continue to build on what I

have learned as a writer for future writings.
