Types of Computer

This document describes different types of computers. It discusses mainframe computers, which are large computers used by many people at the same time, typically in large organizations. Minicomputers are medium-sized computers between mainframes and microcomputers. Microcomputers, also called personal computers, are small computers meant for individual use. Microcomputers include desktops, laptops, tablets, PDAs, and other mobile devices. Each type of computer has different processing power, size, and intended use. The document provides examples of various microcomputers and how they are used.

• Describe how a computer works
• Distinguish the types of
computers
• Identify the different benefits of
computers in different fields
What is a computer?
• Computer once meant a person who
did computations, but now the term
almost universally refers to
automated electronic machinery.
• is a machine that can store and
process information.
Different Kinds of
Computers
•Depending on the size and capacity,
computers are classified into three types:
1. Mainframe computers
2. Minicomputers
3. Microcomputers or Personal
computers.
Mainframe computers
• Large and powerful computers that are used
by many people at the same time; typically
installed in large organizations.
• Located in a central place and accessed by users
via computer terminals or other computers
placed at different locations and connected to
the mainframe computer.
Mainframe computers
Supercomputers
• Extremely powerful mainframe
computers used in scientific and
engineering applications.
• is the fastest, most powerful computer -
and the most expensive
Mainframe computers
Minicomputers
• Minicomputers are medium sized
computers - between Mainframe
computers and Microcomputers
• Are also used by many users at the
same time
• Used in small organizations.
microcomputers
• Small scale computers that fit on
your desk; meant to be used by
one user (at a time)
microcomputers
A Personal Computer that is not designed for
portability is a desktop computer. The
expectation with desktop systems are that you
will set the computer up in a permanent
location. Most desktops offer more power,
storage and versatility for less cost than their
portable brethren.

microcomputers
A workstation is simply a desktop computer
that has a more powerful processor,
additional memory and enhanced
capabilities for performing a special group
of task, such as 3D Graphics or game
development and sound editing.
microcomputers
laptops are portable computers that
integrate the display, keyboard, a pointing
device or trackball. processor, memory and
hard drive all in a battery-operated package
slightly larger than an average hardcover
book.
microcomputers
• Netbooks are ultra-portable
computers that are even smaller
than traditional laptops.
• netbooks internal components are
less powerful than those in regular
microcomputers
• A Chromebook is a mobile device
running Google Chrome OS. The
devices comprise a distinct class of
personal computer falling between a
pure cloud client and traditional laptop.
microcomputers
• Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) are tightly
integrated computers that often use flash memory
instead of a hard drive for storage. These computers
usually do not have keyboards but rely on touchscreen
technology for user input. PDAs are typically smaller
than a paperback novel, very lightweight with a
reasonable' battery life. A slightly larger and heavier
version of the PDA is the handheld computer
microcomputers
• A tablet is a thin, lightweight
mobile computer that has a touch
screen
microcomputers
• A handheld computer is a computer
small enough to fit in one hand
microcomputers
• WEARABLE COMPUTER The latest trend in
computing is wearable computers. Essentially,
common computer applications (e-mail,
database, multimedia, calendar/scheduler) are
integrated into watches, cell phones, visors and
even clothing. For more information see these
articles on computer clothing, smart watches and
fabric PCs.
microcomputers
• A terminal is a computer, usually with limited
processing power, that enables users to send data
to and/or receive information from a server, or
host computer
microcomputers
• Most retail stores use a POS terminal to record
purchases, process credit or debit cards, and
update inventory
microcomputers
• An ATM (automated teller machine) is a
self-service banking terminal that connects to a
host computer through a network
microcomputers
An embedded computer functions as part of a
larger device or system, rather than being used
as a standalone computer. It performs a highly
specific function. Applications for embedded
PCs range from industrial automation and
in-vehicle computing, to digital signage,
robotics, and more.
microcomputers
Mobile phones are used for a variety of purposes,
such as keeping in touch with family members,
for conducting business, and in order to have
access to a telephone in the event of an
emergency. Some people carry more than one
mobile phone for different purposes, such as for
