My Reflection as a Writer

All writers stumble upon different obstacles when it comes to creating or perfecting a text. We endure
diverse situations in which we feel extremely confused or full of self doubt. It’s a universal experience that
teaches us that only through experimentation we can achieve what we truly seek. For me, the course of
Technical Writing for Biology (INGL4021) thought me plenty of things, but the most important aspect is
that it made me try what I thought I never would. Since I was young, I liked to write in a more informal
matter and sought interest in the mundane or extraordinary when it came to writing. But everything I did
was never technical nor professional. It was merely an enjoyment for me. When stumbling upon the course
I was possessed by fear and questions. The thought of writing technical documents made me feel insecure
because I thought my writing skills did not go with that line. Even so I understood it was extremely
necessary for me, as a science major to dominate and understand said area.

When I began this adventure I noticed that my main errors relied on the small details like misusing white
space, missing the mentioning of years when it was necessary, not substituting words for more professional
ones, using the incorrect order of sections, not highlighting the most important aspects of a document,
leaving key information out, using small fonts when bigger ones were needed, poorly using visuals, writing
verbs in their passive form, and capitalizing words when it wasn’t necessary. This were the errors I mainly
committed but through the continuation of different documents I began to notice them and could work them
out. It was necessary for me to make them so I could learn. I am grateful for it.

The course not only worked with writing but how it could be integrated to science, our area of study and
I really enjoyed that. Specifically, through agriculture and biotechnology. Both disciplines I find
fascinating. Not only did I learn how to properly write technical documents but also about nature and its
components. Something you do not find in any course. Taking the class was not easy but it surely made us
better writers and individuals because we got the opportunity of learning about problems that are currently
affecting our environment. Which I’ll deeply treasure and hope to integrate in my way of reasoning not
only as a student but as a professional.
