1 SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES USING

2 ELIMINATION METHOD”.

3 BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

4 The solution of a system of linear linear equations in two variables can be

5 determined graphically or algebraically. But today, we are going to focus on

6 solving it algebraically using the elimination method.

7 BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER .

8 Example Number 1. Find the solution of the given system of linear equations

9 by elimination method. The equations are, 2x+y=5 and x-y=-2.

10 Using the elimination method, we have steps to solve the equation.

11 Step 1. Write equation 1 or equation 2 in standard form AX+BY=C. So we

12 have, for Equation 1● 2x+y=5 and for

13 Equation 2● x-y=-2

14 If the given equations are already in standard form, proceed to step 2. So

15 since the given equations are already in standard form, we proceed to step 2.

16 Step 2. Eliminate either x or y by adding equation 1 and equation 2. So we

17 add 2x+x and that is 3x and the variable y is being eliminated, we also add 5

18 plus -2, so we have 3x=3.

19 Step 3. Solve for x by dividing both sides of the equation by 3. So we have 3x

20 divided by 3 is equals to 3 divided by 3 , that is, x=1. Since we already have

21 the value of x, we proceed to finding the value of y.

22 Step 4. Solve for the value of y to Equation 1 or 2.

2 -MORE-
Applying multimedia…4

1 Substitute the value of x that is 1 to 2x+y=5, so we have 2(1)+y=5, that is

2 2+y=5, then transpose 2 to the right side of the equation, so we have y=5-2,

3 then simplify 5 minus 2, that is y=3.

4 Therefore, the solution is (1,3)

5 Do you understand? Hope so.

6 BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

7 We proceed with Example:2 and this time, we have a word problem.

8 Ben and Mae, hospital doctors, are both frontliners of the COVID-19

9 pandemic crisis. Every month, they receive letters from different people who

10 really appreciate their self-sacrificing spirit of love and dedication for their

11 work. Today, they count the number of mailed letters they got. Together,

12 they received 250 letters. Mae received 50 mailed letters more than that of

13 Ben. How many mailed letters did each one get? (2x)

14 To solve the problem, Step 1. Represent the unknown quantities and write the

15 system of linear equations, and then identify the equation 1 and equation 2.

16 So that is,

17 Let x, be the number of mailed letters that Ben received.

18 Let y, be the number of mailed letters that Mae received. The equations are:

19 x+y=250, this is equation 1, that represent Mae and Ben’s total received

20 letters together, and the equation 2 is, y=x+50 which represent that Mae

21 received 50 mailed letters more than that of Ben.

22 Step 2. Write equation 2 in the form AX+BY=C. If the given equation is

23 already in AX+BY=C, proceed to the next step. So in this case, equation 1 is

2 -MORE-
Applying multimedia…5

1 already in standard form, but the equation 2 will be written in standard form so

2 that is -x+y=50 and then we proceed to elimination method.

3 So, I choose to eliminate my x, ay sorry, it’s the variable x I mean, by adding

4 the two equations that is x+y=250 and -x+y=50, I eliminated x, so the sum is

5 2y=300

6 Step 3. To find the value of y, divide both sides of the equations by 2 so it will

7 be, 2y=300 divide both sides by 2, the answer will be y=150.

8 Step 4. Let us solve the value of x by substituting the value of y to any

9 equation 1 or equation 2. In this case, I prefer equation 1, so x+y=250, it will

10 be x+150=250, by transposing 150 to the right side of the equation that is

11 x=250-150, so x=100. Therefore, the solution is (100,150). Ben received 100

12 letters while Mae received 150 letters.
