Differentiate Linear Equations in Two Variables From Linear Inequalities in Two Variables

1. The radio broadcast lesson aims to teach Grade 8 learners to differentiate between linear equations and inequalities in two variables. 2. The teachers explain that an equation uses an equal sign while an inequality uses less than, greater than, or other relational symbols. 3. Examples of each are worked through, including word problems, and learners practice identifying equations and inequalities on their own.

3 RADIO TEACHER: Aiming to reach all learners anytime, anywhere in

4 whatever way we can, the Department of Education, Region V, Schools

5 Division Office of Albay, and Malinao National High School, 301810, School of

6 Character, offers a Radio-Based Instruction in response to the DepEd’s Basic

7 Education - Learning Continuity Plan, for our Grade 8 mathematics learners

8 entitled linear inequalities in two variables.

9 Good day learners! I am Teacher Bert and I am teacher Ram, your teacher

10 duo on the radio. For today’s episode, we will be differentiating linear

11 equations in two variables from linear inequalities in two variables. It’s gonna

12 be another day of learning, fun, and excitement for today’s episode in grade 8

13 mathematics. As we aim to make every Albayano learner a Math lover,

14 Remember, dear learners, you are Mathinik, Mathindi, and Mathibay. Time

15 Check it’s ten twenty in the morning. It’s Mathematics time!

16 BIZ STINGER MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

17 But before we start, let’s have our checklist first. Ballpen (check), notebook

18 (check), worksheets (check), and of course snacks (check na check).

8 So, learners are you ready! Well, that’s good to know…. we are ready and

9 excited too for our lesson.

10 So sit back, relax, and enjoy cause here in 101.5, I CARE Radio. We care! …

11 BIZ STINGER MCS 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

12 OK learners, today’s lesson is all about differentiating linear equation in two

13 variables from linear inequalities in two variables. Sir! As we can see, the only

14 differences between the two are the words equation and inequalities.

15 Yes! That’s a very good observation. An Equation is a mathematical sentence

16 that uses equals or an equal sign. Whether it is linear, quadratic, or cubic or

17 any other polynomial as long as it uses the equal sign, it is called an

18 equation.

19 Now let’s take a look at an inequality. In an inequality, inequality symbols such

20 as less than, greater than, less than or equal to, and greater than or equal to

21 are used. When a mathematical sentence uses any of these symbols it is

22 called an inequality.

Applying multimedia…3

1 Let’s have this first example. 2x + 3 = 4, what do you think of this

2 mathematical sentence? Is it an equation or an inequality? Yes very good, it is

3 an equation because it uses equal sign. What type of equation you think it is?

4 To identity what type of equation it is, we will consider each term of the

5 equation. 2x + 3=4

6 The first term is2 x, the second term is 3 and their sum is equal to 4. How

7 many variables does it have? Yes it has a 1 variable which is x. Now to

8 identify the degree of that equation, we’ll take a look at the exponent of the

9 variable. Since it does not have an exponent, it means the exponent of the

10 variable x is 1. We can now say that the mathematical statement is a linear

11 equation in 1 variable because the highest exponent is 1 and it uses only one

12 variable “x”.

13 Let’s have example another example. 3x + 2y < 6. What do you think of this

14 mathematical statement? Is it an equation or an inequality? Is your answer

15 inequality? Well, you got it right because this mathematical sentence uses the

16 inequality symbol, lesser than/less than. You will notice here that it uses two

17 variables, variables “x” and variable “y” and the highest exponent is 1.

18 Therefore, we can say that the mathematical statement 3x + 2y < 6 is a linear

19 inequality in two variables...

20 BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

21 Let’s have few more examples; number 1. 5x + 2y = 10. Is it a linear equation

22 or a linear inequality? It is a linear equation, because it uses equals (equal

23 sign)

2 -MORE-
Applying multimedia…4

1 Number 2. y > 2x + 4. Is it a linear equation or a linear inequality? Since it

2 uses the inequality symbol, greater, therefore, it is a linear inequality.

3 What about 3 x+2 y ≥ 9? Yes, very good my dear learners, it is a linear

4 inequality. The inequality symbol used is greater than or equal to.

5 BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

6 Now. Let’s consider word problems. Can you still differentiate inequality form

7 equation?

8 Worry no more because we are here to help you. To differentiate whether a

9 word problem is a linear inequality or a linear equation, you have to be mindful

10 of the words used. If you encounter the phrases/words equals, is equal to, is

11 it is an equation.

12 But sir what about in inequality? For inequality, the following phrases are used

13 is less than, is greater than, is more than, is less than or equal to, is at

14 most, is greater than or equal to, is at least.

15 BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

16 Let’s have a few examples. Number 1. The difference between the weight of

17 Diana (D) and Princess (P) is 26 kg. First, let us translate it to a mathematical

18 sentence. We can use the variables D for Diana’s weight and P for Princess’

19 weight equal to 26. Now we have the equation D + P = 26. Did you get it? I

20 hope so.

21 Number 2. The total amount of 1- peso coins and 5-peso coins in Jinrick’s

22 coin purse is more than Php 150. Let us translate it to a mathematical

23 statement! First, let x be the number of 1 peso coins and y the number of 5

24 peso coins. We have to be mindful of the words used, the word problem uses

1 the phrase more than, therefore, we use the greater than symbol. Now, the

2 mathematical model for this word problem is x + 5y > 150. This is a linear

3 inequality in two variables.

4 BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

5 Now can you try it on your own? For uniformity purposes, please use X as the

6 first variable and Y as the second variable. Learners are you ready!

7 Number 1. The price of a motorcycle (X) less Php 36000 is less than or equal

8 to the price of a bicycle (Y), is your answer is x−36000 ≤ y

9 Number 2. Seven times the number of male teachers(X) is the number of

10 female teachers(y), did you answer 7x=y? Then your answer is correct. Well

11 done learners.

12 Number 3. The total amount Jose paid for two kilos of chicken(X) and 3 kilos

13 of pork(Y) is Php 850. The mathematical translation for it is 2x+3y=850. Very

14 good my dear learners

15 BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

16 For our final activity for today, I am going to ask you to give 5 examples of a

17 linear equations in two variables and 5 examples of linear inequality in two

18 variables. Write your answers in your answer sheets. Don’t forget to bring it

19 in the next schedule of retrieval of modules and worksheets.

20 Or you may take a picture of it and send it to your respective math teachers

21 through messenger.

22 EXTRO BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

23 And this is the end of our lesson for today. I hope you had fun learning while
