This document discusses relay logic circuits and components used in industrial electronic control systems. It describes common mechanical switches like push buttons and limit switches. It also describes control relays and their basic wiring diagram. Electromagnetic contactors are discussed for handling higher currents. The document also covers timing devices like timers, on delay and off delay circuits. Examples of relay logic diagrams are provided to illustrate sequencing of operations. Work Shop practice II.

Chapter 1 Relay logic circuits
1.1 Introduction to Contactor and Electromechanical timer

Mechanical Switches:- Mechanical switches are used in industrial electronic Control to initiate or
interrupt the flow of current in a circuit. The most common type of switches used in industry are push
buttons, toggle switches, limit switches, float switches, pressure switches.
One of the more popular single pole input devices is push buttons

a) Push button normally open

b) Push button normally closed
c) Push button normally open/closed
Limit Switches:- are switch mechanism usually operated by motion of part of machine such as slide
or cam or other mechanical equipment such as Conveyor

a) No c) NO held closed
b) NC d) NC held open

Control Relay: - A relay is the electromechanical equivalent thyristor (electronic switch). Relays
have only two possible operating sate ON or OFF. Relays are classified according to their use as
Control relay, Power relay or sensing relay.
a) Relay coil
b) Normally open contact
c) Normally closed contact

The figure shown below the basic wiring diagram for control relay and two pilot lamps

When the switch open lamp 1 Off

1
When the switch closed CR energize and L2 off

When a relay has a current handling capability above 15A it is classified as an Electromagnetic
contactor

Seal in Circuit a seal in circuit is a method of maintaining current flow after momentary switch has
been pressed and released.

Over load relay Excessive current flow in industrial Electronic circuit can be prevented by using
fuse, CB, and over load relay. Over load relay are designed to allow a relay to remain closed during
the start up period when the inrush current rises very high but provide over load protection if
excessive current flow occurs after the motor has been started

Fig an overload relay coil and its normally closed contacts

Overload relays are classified as either thermal or magnetic.

The thermal over load relay respond to high temperature caused by over load current, Magnetic over
load relay react only to excessive current and not affected by temperature overload relay are used in
both control and power circuit.
Timing
2
Timing device or timers are used in many types of industrial Electronic control. A time delay relay
(TDR) is advice that provides a delayed switching action between the time an event is initiated and
time that the event is actually performed. There are three basic types of TDRs Electromechanical,
Electronumatic and Electronic. For this three the most popular in modern industrial control system
is Electronic Timer.
TDRs use timing coils and timing contacts or legs to enable or disable various control circuits. Relay
timer can be divided in two general classifications ON delay and OFF delay
When contact of timer changes state after the coil is energized for period of time it is called a time
delay ON (TDON) if contact is open or closed after the coil is de energized for a period of time is
called Time delay off (TDOFF)
a) Normally closed time open ON delay
b) Normally open time closed On delay
c) Normally closed time closed OFF delay
d) Normally open time Open OFF delay

Relay Logic Control Circuits

Relay logic is a method of controlling industrial electronic circuits by using relay and contacts. The
schematic diagram for relay logic circuits are often called Line diagram. Relay logic diagram

represent the physical interconnection of devices. The basic format for relay logic diagram is
follows:
1) Two vertical line that connect all devices on relay logic diagram are labeled L1 and L2 (L1 and
L2 are voltage of control circuit)
2) Output devices always connected to L2 over load shown b/n output and L2
3) Control devices are always shown b/n L1 and output device , control device may be in series or
in parallel each other
4) Device perform stop function in series device perform start function in parallel.
5) Electrical device shown in their normal conditions such as NC, NO after energizing charge the
state.

In general The following suggestions apply to designing a relay logic diagram

a) Define the process to be controlled
b) Draw the sketch operation process make sure all component of the system present in drawing .
c) Determine the sequence of operation.
d) Write relay logic diagram from sequence of operation.

Example 1 Design the relay logic diagram which perform the ff operation. At instant you give power
to control Red pilot lamp gives light if you press your start push button Red lamp

Example 2 A work piece loaded on a conveyor belt and operates b/n two limit travel the sequences
operation as follows
1) When the start button is pressed control relay CR energized and conveyor move forward
direction and limit switch 1 returns to its NC state

4
2) When the work piece contact with Limit switch two the motor reversed and conveyor moved
reverse direction
3) When the work piece contact with limit switch one runs in forward direction
4) Pressing the stop button stop the motors regardless of which direction it is running.

Exercise:- Draw the relay logic diagram using three time delay relay and strart stop push
buttons to perform the ff functions
a) When the start button is pressed a magnetic contactor seal in and motor runs in forward direction
for a minute
b) The motor will stop for 30 seconds
c) After 30 second has elapsed the motor run in reverse direction for 1 minute
d) After running the reverse direction for 1 minute in reverse direction remain stopped until the start
button pressed restart the cycle
e) Pressing stop button and tripping of overload relay will stop the motor.

Assignment on work shop practice

10 points
1) Design a control circuit will permit five motors in the ff manners

5
a) When motor no one started motor no 2 will start after 10 second delay and will run only
while No 1 in operation
b) It shall not possible to start Motor No 3, 4 or 5 unless motor NO1 and 2 are running
c) It shall not possible to start motor no 3 when no 4 running or number 4 when no 3 running
d) The tripping of overload on motor no1 or no2 shall stop all motors
e) The tripping of overload on motor 5 wills top later and motor no3 or no4 which is running
2) It is desired to operate two motors from single start stop station under the following condition
a) The pressing of the start button shall start motor no 1 and 30 second later motor no 2 shall start
b) After motor No2 has been running for 1min it shall stop motor no1 continue running
c) The pressing of stop button shall stop all motors
d) During operation if the tripping of overload of motor 2 wills stop both motor but the tripping of
overload of motor no 1 affect only motor no 1
3) Design the relay logic diagram using three time delay and start stop station to perform the following
function
a) When the start button is pressed magnetic contactor energized and motor runs in forward direction for
1 min
b) The motor will stop for 30 second
c) After 30 second has elapsed the motor the motor in reverse direction for 1 min
d) After running the reverse direction for 1 min in reverse direction remains stopped until start button
pressed to restart the cycle
e) The tripping of over load relay will stop the motor

4) Design the relay logic circuit which operates three lamps sequentially and repetitively.

hi....i tried installing this and it works fine.

Just follow following steps:
turn off internet and windows defender realtime protection
1) unzip the file...
2) Mount the MATLAB image virtually and run the setup file as administrator
3) open the _ReadmeWin file for further steps
4) when asked for installation file path....select the liscence_standalone.lic and let the installation
get over.
5)once installation is done copy the libmwlmgrimpl.dll and paste and replace the same file in
MATLAB location as mentioned in the readme..

that's it....open MATLAB. now you can turn on the internet and defender and also login with
MathWorks accounts
