Infimum, Sequence and Series

1. A new virus is circulating on a remote island. On day one there were 10 people infected,
with the number of new infections increasing at a rate of 40% per day. Find the number of
infected people after one week (7 days), assuming no one has recovered yet.

2. Consider a square whose each side is 1 unit. Now in the first step, partition the square into
four equal squares. Then remove the top right square and the bottom left square. In the
next step, consider the top left square and similarly partition it and proceed as before. If
we continue like this for ever, then what will be the total area of the final region? For
visualization, see the below image.

3. A perfect binary tree is a binary tree in which all interior nodes have two children and all
leaves have the same depth or same level. An example of a perfect binary tree is the
(non-incestuous) ancestry chart of a person to a given depth, as each person has exactly
two biological parents (one mother and one father). See the below figure.

1
(a) Calculate the sequence related to the number of vertices of the tree at level n.
(b) Determine whether the sequence converges or diverges.
(c) What is the level of the node 2022?

4. Raghav is saving for a new car. He puts Rs. 10000 into his savings account and then each
month he puts in Rs. 2000 more than the month before. He needs Rs. 450000 for the car.
Assuming no interest is added, find, the month in which Raghav would be able to buy the
car.

5. The following figure shows an ”infinite staircase” constructed from cubes. Find the total
volume of the staircase, given that the largest cube has a side of length 1 and each
successive cube has a side whose length is half that of the preceding cube.

MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS

1. Find the maximum, minimum, Infimum and Supremum of the following sets. Also mention
if the sets are bounded.

(c) S = { n+m : n, m ∈ N}.

(d) an = n+1 + n+2 + · · · + n+n ∀ n ∈ N.

(h) part converges absolutely or conditionally.
