Urbana of Urbana at Feliza: A Character Analysis

Urbana at Feliza is a novel written in Tagalog by a priest known for his compelling sermons that
describes the behaviors that evolved in Europe during the Renaissance period. The novel was written by
Modesto de Castro in an attempt to remind people of the value of purity and the ideal characteristics that
they should practice and enrich.
Urbana, a character in the story, is the older sister of the novel's two protagonists, Feliza and
Honesto. In Manila, she works as a teacher's aide. Urbana writes and sends letters to Feliza, who lives in
their hometown of Paombong, Bulacan, on the golden principles, excellent manners, and proper behavior.
Basically, Urbana always preaches about proper behavior in almost every aspect of existence.
While reading a portion of the novel, I came to understand that Urbana is attentive to her
surroundings. It is as if she is always surveying and not missing anything of what’s happening around her.
For instance, in one of her letters she wrote, “Hindi marunong ang mga bagong tubo na bata na kasing edad
mo na magdasal na malalaman sa Doctrina Cristiana. Ang pagkilala sa Diyos ay nakabatay sa kasipagan o
kapabayaan ng magulang.” While it is good that she is always on her toes, I think that being too observant
sometimes makes her condemnatory of others. This reminds me of how our world works today. Every so
often, we are being too critical of others and somehow, this makes us indifferent towards them and their
circumstances.
I think that Urbana is as strict as she can be, especially to her younger siblings: Feliza and Honesto.
If I compare it, she is more uptight and firmer than Maria Clara, a character from Noli Me Tangere. The
reason why I described Urbana as strict is because she always instructs her younger siblings to do this and
that, and to never do this and that. Strangely enough, directing someone to act a certain way is not the most
effective way to discipline and does not work as how we perceive it to. Occasionally, it causes someone to
deviate from the values and virtues that we are trying to instill to them because there is too much forbidding
that is happening.
Moreover, Urbana has a lot of characteristics that we should learn from. For instance, she is a very
devotional person. She praises God every waking day and thank Him for keeping her away from harm.
According to Feliza’s letter to Urbana, “Masipag at mapagpuri sa Diyos, mapagpasalamat at iniadya sa
panganib at pinagkalooban ng buhay. Diyos ang unang bigkas ng labi sapagkat Diyos ang unang iniisip.”
Urbana is also obedient to her parents and a very modest individual that has a “mabining lakad.”
Urbana from the novel Urbana at Feliza, originally entitled “Pagsusulatan ng Dalawang Binibini
na si Urbana at Feliza,” represents the Filipina, the child, and the older sister that most people, if not
everyone, wants. She is an image of a smart and diligent sister to her siblings who will do everything,
particularly teaching them the conducts, before they debut in the society.
Urbana’s character personifies what people perceive to be an ideal Filipina --- mahinhin,
mapagmahal sa pamilya, at maka Diyos.
