INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY
Process Questions:
MATH8-Q2W7F1
Inductive reasoning is a process of coming to a general conclusion from seeing
patterns in specific examples and looking for the regularity in those patterns.
Conjecture is a concluding statement that is reached using inductive reasoning.
Example1:
Write a conjecture that describes the pattern 2, 4, 12, 48, 240. Then use your conjecture
to find the next item in the sequence.
Step1. 2 4 12 48 240
x2 x3 x4 x5
Step2. Make a conjecture
The numbers are multiplied by 2, 3, 4, and 5. The next number will be the product
of 240 and 6 .
Step 3. Predict next item
1,440
Example 2:
Write a conjecture that describes the pattern in the sequence. Then use your conjecture
to find the next item in the sequence.

Example 3:
Observe the square boxes below. Make a conjecture about the next figure based on the
pattern.
Guided Practice
MATH8-Q2W7D1
A. Find a pattern for each sequence. Use the pattern to show the next two terms.
MATH8-Q2W7D2
B. Use the sequence and inductive reasoning to make a conjecture.
