Mathematical Thinking 1

STAGE 1
a. Why did the car derail?
According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Sand
Blaster Roller Coaster derailed due to excessive speed and other safety violations,
including "four safety cables not properly fastened" and "damaged brackets." The
roller coaster cars' wheels were reported to have lifted off the track numerous times,
according to the engineers, who claimed to have discovered evidence of this. They
said that the safety wheel system below the steel pipe that made up the tracks had had
numerous derailments in the past that had caused damage to it.
b. What safety measures should be implemented to prevent more accidents?
The aforementioned catastrophe would have been prevented if derailments that
happened during the previous five years had "been adequately addressed by limiting
car speed," according to one study.
c. What was the velocity of the car when it derailed?
Engineers discovered it had been moving steadily at roughly 22 mph or 35 km/h,
which is quicker than previous rides of a similar size and more than the track and cars
could safely support.
d. What was the acceleration?
we couldn't find the acceleration in other websites or articles, but this could be
2
𝑣
calculated by using the following equation 𝐴𝑐 = 2 . Where v is velocity, r is the
𝑟
radius of the slope angle and Ac is the centripetal acceleration. So for using this
procedure it will be necessary to have the function of the curve that was used in the
part of the accident.
e. Finally, in which direction was the car moving when the accident happened?
The front coaster car derailed on the second level of the track, 17 feet above the
ground, causing the disaster. The three attached roller coaster vehicles, according to
Quest engineers, were leaving a 540-degree spiral turn towards the ride's bottom.
2. Determine polynomial mathematical models—degree three or less—that match 𝑓(𝑥)
and 𝑔(𝑥) in the image above.
The polynomial mathematical model that match with function 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥) is of second
degree.
3. Find the equation of the straight line that joins the points 𝐴 and 𝐵.
25 1105
𝑦 =− 23
𝑥+ 23
4. Would it be correct the use of a straight line to join 𝐴 and 𝐵? Explain.
No, this function of a straight line that connects both points of the roller coaster won't be
accurate to use. This is because the acceleration that it will gain would be unmeasurable and
probably more than the needed, also the car will crash with the point B of the roller coaster,
this because if the line that connects doesn't have a soft curve that connects them the car wont
follow the road as planned.
5. What conditions or characteristics must have the curve that would join these two
positions? Elaborate.
It has to be a soft curve that goes through both points.
We must make an equation with the curve equation formula in order to create the curve that
the roller coaster should follow
6. What is the use of the first derivative in this situation?
to determine the maximums and minimums of the coaster, so it doesn't exceed those points
of the coaster and prevent risks.
7. And, what is the use of the second derivative?
It's used to know at what point the coaster has to change its path of course, because in a
physical world the movement of a function can't be moving in a single lineal course forever.
8. Determine a polynomial function 𝑝(𝑥) that joins the points 𝐴 and 𝐵 (hint: if you have 𝑛
conditions it is suggested to create a polynomial of degree 𝑛 − 1). Use differential
calculus to verify that the selected model is correct. Plot this new function on the same
Cartesian plan along with 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥) to confirm your findings.
Function:
9. Find a function ℎ(𝑥) = 𝑎 sin(𝑤𝑥) + 𝑏 cos(𝑤𝑥) + 𝑐 sin(2𝑤𝑥) + 𝑑 cos(2𝑤𝑥) that satisfies the
previous conditions
and passes through 𝐴 and 𝐵. Plot 𝑓(𝑥), 𝑔(𝑥), and ℎ(𝑥) on the same Cartesian plane.
10.Find another function 𝑞(𝑥) = 𝑎(𝑒 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑒 −𝑏𝑥)⁄2 + 𝑐 satisfying the aforementioned
conditions. Again, use differential calculus to confirm your discoveries, and plot 𝑞(𝑥)
accompanied by 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥) on the same plane.
STAGE 2
Write a clear, unambiguous, and organized report of your analysis, computations and
conclusions on the following:
I. Wooden roller coasters are composed of steel strip running rails mounted on a
laminated wooden track. Look for prices of this type of materials to do a budget
on the profile to join the points 𝐴 and 𝐵.
length=67.90 m
A budget of $1,444,438.65 will be required to build the missing section of the roller
coaster.
II. The structure that support the tracks uses wood available in US. It also needs
glued-laminated timber—treated with heat and pressure to increase its
mechanical properties—to build the structure. The cost of a cubic meter of this
material is about $700 USD. Do a budget to build the structure that supports the
profile that joins 𝐴 and 𝐵.
A budget of $178,859.46 is needed to buy the wood necessary to create the base of the
structure that will join points A and B of the roller coaster.
