Perform the one- sample test. Follow the steps of hypothesis testing
1. The mean weight for baggage of 25 passengers from USA bound for the
Philippines to be checked in an international travel is 31.8 kilos with a standard
deviation of 16. Test the claim that the population mean baggage weight is equal
to 30 kilos at 0.02 level of significance.
Steps:
Thus, we reject the Ho if t < −2.492 or t > 2.492 otherwise, we fail to reject Ho.
5. Computation.
x̄ − μ 0 31.8 −30
t= = =0.5625
s / √n 16
√ 25
6. Statistical Decision.
Since the computed t-value is 0.5625 is not in the critical region, so we accept
H0 (reject H1 )
7. Conclusion.
Thus, the test result does provide sufficient evidence that the population mean
baggage of 25 passenger’s weight is equal to 30 kilos.

2. A random sample of 100 recorded deaths in the country during the past year
showed an average life span of 71.8 years, with a standard deviation of 8.9
years. Does this seem to indicate that the average life span today is greater than
70 years? Use α =0.05 .
Steps:
x̄ − μ 0
Z=
s / √n
Z> Z a
Z> Z 0.0500
5. Computation.
x̄ − μ 0 71.8 −70
Z= = =2.0224
s / √n 8.9
√ 100
6. Statistical Decision.
7. Conclusion.
Hence, the test result provides sufficient evidence that the average life span today
is greater than 70.
