1. Meaning of Literature

According to Salman Rushdie (1990), Literature is the one place in any society where within the secrecy
of our own heads, we can hear voices talking about everything in every possible way.

2. Importance of Literature

Studying literature is a worthwhile task. It has a special way of communicating the advantages and
benefits it offers. These things will become clear to literature students while they are reading, studying,
or afterward. The importance of literature includes:

1. Literature helps us grow both personally and intellectually.

2. Literature links us with the rest of the world of which we are a part of.

3. Literature enables us to transcend our immediate time, place, and culture and make connections with
other human beings and their concerns.

4.Literature encourages us to develop mature empathy with all forms of life: human, animal, plant.

5. Literature sharpens our sense of moral judgment.

6. Literature stimulates our imagination and ingenuity.

7. Literature shows the significance of irony, paradox, oxymoron and ambivalence of life.

8. Literature allows us to see the world in different vantage points.

9. Literature relives history.

10.Literature reminds us that we are human beings.

3. Generic classifications of Literature

Literature is divided in two types: Prose and Poetry.

Prose. It describes any piece of writing that adheres to a fundamental grammatical pattern (think words
and phrases arranged into sentences and paragraphs). Simply said, prose refers to language that uses
the same natural patterns as common speech. There are two types of prose: fiction and nonfiction.

Poetry. The interaction of words and rhythm is the foundation of the literary genre known as poetry. It
frequently uses meter and rhyme (a set of rules governing the number and arrangement of syllables in
each line). To create sounds, images, and concepts that may be too complicated or abstract to
articulate, poets string together words. Narrative, lyric, and dramatic poetry are the three subcategories
of poetry.

4. Literary devices

Literary devices are methods and components that authors employ to convey their message. Either
aesthetically or simply, feelings and concepts. Additionally, it emphasizes the significance of a text’s
relevance and connection to its subjects (social issues) and characters (social status). As each reader can
think both inwardly and outwardly, recognize, and critically analyze literature, these devices can test and
inspire our mental and emotional abilities.

5. Literary standards

The seven literary standards are: artistry , suggestiveness , intellectual value, spiritual value,
permanence, universality and style. These are a set of characteristics to determine whether or not a
work is literary.

6. Literary critical theories

Literary Critical Theory is a tool that helps you find meaning in stories, poems and plays. There are many
different ways to interpret a novel or short story.
