1 Introduction
1.1 What is Wave Companion?
The Wave Companion is the software that accompanies the Wave. It allows you to create
custom applications for each type of inspection, transfer them to the device and retrieve
documents, such as reports and snapshots from the Wave.

1.2 Application Concept

The Wave offers the possibility of creating applications. An application is a grouping of
parameters that performs a specific ultrasonic inspection, much like those found on a
mobile phone. Once created, these new applications are transferred and installed on a
Wave unit. They are then immediately available to the Wave user.

1.3 Configuration Concept

A configuration is a subset of an application. It can be modified and transferred from the
Wave Companion to the Wave and vice versa. However, the configuration modifications
are more restricted compared to the application. Indeed, the modification of a
configuration depends on the choices made when the related application was modified.

1.4 This Manual

This document is intended as a user manual for Wave Companion and its possibilities.
For instructions on functionalities of the Wave itself, please refer to the Wave User
Manual.

2 Navigate Through the Wave Companion

Navigation within the Wave Companion is done using the sidebar. Each tab has its own
specific behaviours.

Navigation
bar

Figure 1 – At a glance, it is easy to navigate with the sidebar.

Connection: Connect the devices to the Wave Companion in order to transfer

applications and their configurations (through Transfer Apps tab), and download files
from the Wave (through Download tab).

Manage Apps: This tab contains two windows, i.e. Manage Applications and Edit
Application. The first one is on creating applications, modify them and importing and
exporting them. The second one is about editing parameters of the configurations.

Transfer Apps: Transfer applications and their configurations between the Wave
Companion and Wave, and vice versa.

Download: Download files (snapshots, reports and T-log) from your Wave to your PC
via the Wave Companion.

About: Legal notices

Settings: Allow you to set default choice for language and units for new created
applications. There is also an option regarding the snapshots and the configuration
linked to that.

Version 7

NOTE: It is possible to change the unit system of an application being

edited, see Section 5.5 for more details.

Version 7
Wave Companion User Manual 11

3 Connection
The Connection tab allows you to see all the Waves connected on the network and to
select a Wave to transfer applications (see Section 6) or to download various documents
(see Section 7).

Figure 2 – Overview of the Connection tab when, at least, one Wave is connected to the Wave
Companion

3.1 Network
In order to detect a Wave, it must be on the same local network as the Wave Companion.
This network can be either wired or wireless. If, at least, one Wave is connected, a green
check will appear on the Connection tab.

Figure 3 – The connection is established with a Wave.

If no Wave is connected, an orange triangle with an exclamation mark will appear on the
Connection tab.

Figure 4 – There are no Waves on the same Wave Companion’s local network

3.2 Information About the Selected Wave

Once a Wave is selected in the list of connected Waves, information about it is displayed:

 Name
 IP Address
 Version (software version)
 Last Calibration

NOTE: If the selected Wave is not up to date, the disk space gauge will
not be displayed.

NOTE: Files like reports, snapshots, T-log and applications contribute

to lowering disk space available. To delete an application, see Section
6.3. To delete the other files, see Section 7.3

3.3 Connected Waves

A table shows all the Waves connected to the local network. By clicking on the desired
Wave, it is selected, its detailed information is displayed, and application transfer and
document download can be done from this device. In addition, the table headers can be
used to sort the instruments.

4 Manage Applications
This tab contains two windows, i.e. Manage Applications and Edit Configuration. The
first one is about creating applications, modify them and importing and exporting them.
See Section 5 for more details.

4.1 Overview
The Wave Companion comes with seven applications already installed, tools to manage
applications and application-related features, accessible through the right click of your
mouse.

5.9 Add a Custom Part

With Wave software version 1.8 or later, it is now possible to use custom parts in addition
to the built-in specimens offered. Custom parts are created by defining a 2D component
using a CAD software (like FreeCad or LibreCAD) or an NDT simulation tool, such as
BeamTool. Then, by exporting a simple DXF format file and importing the part into the
Wave Companion software, the user can determine the reflective and non-reflective
segments that define the part. Next, the fully defined part is associated to a Wave
application. At this point, the new custom part will be available when running the specific
application on the Wave. See the Wave User’s Manual for more information. The diagram
below shows the workflow.

Version 7
42 Wave Companion User Manual

5.9.1 Add a Part

Under Manage Apps, you can add a new custom part to an existing app or a new one.
Only one DXF file can be assigned per Wave application.

To add or replace a new custom part, select the app, and click on this button located
beside Part.

The Windows browser should appear and open the DXF file. The DXF file name should
appear under of the Part item.

NOTE: Only DXF files made with circular arc and straight lines work
the Wave Companion. Splines are not supported.

Version 7
Wave Companion User Manual 43

5.9.2 Edit a Part

To edit an existing CAD, select the app and right-click on the DXF file name. If this CAD is
new, the segments must be edited so that there is at least one probe contact surface.

Inside the Custom Part editor, there are tools to apply the interactive scan plan properties
to the drawings.

5.9.2.1 Segment Properties

1. Probe contact surface: The selected probe can be dragged along the contact
surface. Its index position is determined by the Beam Exit Point and expressed
by the Probe Distance. The probe Orientation can be reversed on demand in the
Wave instrument. The default value can be set during the application edition.
2. Non-reflective segment: This segment type allows sound to get through. The scan
plan ray tracer never interacts with this geometry. The probe cannot sit on this
line.
3. Reflective segment: It is impossible to drag and drop the probe as well as the non-
reflective segment to this segment. Beams physically behave like a normal internal
reflection.

Tip: You can apply the same property over many segments by clicking a segment and
holding down on the mouse button.

Version 7
44 Wave Companion User Manual

5.9.2.2 Flip the Probe

The 2D drawing may set the probe inside the geometry. Select Flip and click on the
segment to change this probe surface orientation.

5.9.2.3 Part Origin Datum

The DXF file contains a reference point for its origin coordinates. It appears as a red dot
in the Edit Part drawing zone. You can move the datum anywhere in the CAD using your
mouse pointer.

The Part datum origin dictates the Probe Distance towards this point.

By default, the Probe Distance is the distance between the front of the probe and the
next segment along the contact surface. For a given Part datum position, it may rotate
the Probe Distance orientation, so the probe is guided by this origin position.

5.9.2.4 Edit Part Scale

A DXF file dimension may be assumed in different length units. You may scale the drawing
in mm (by default), in inches, or by using a custom size. Select the unit system or use the
custom coefficient ratio to get a proper scaled drawing.

Version 7
Wave Companion User Manual 45

NOTE: By default, new Wave applications do not shortcut the current

part to the custom part item. To update the default part type, the
Wave application is edited under Part/Type/ and the custom CAD file
must be selected.

5.9.3 2D CAD Troubleshooting

It is possible to misuse the lines when importing and editing the DXF. Here are some
issues to fix when the A-scan ray tracer is not working.

 The probe appears “inside” the part. Solution: Go back to the Wave Companion
and flip the probe to the outside.
 Keep single line contouring; Solution: Delete superimposed lines. This may lead to
narrow and invisible skips between those lines.
 The line is set to non-reflective but the A-scan bounces on it: Solution: There is a
hidden reflective line underneath, and it must be deleted using a CAD software.
(BeamTool, for example).
 Avoid non-reflective and reflection line crossing. e.g.: a cross made with two lines,
and one is non-reflective. Solution: The cross should be made using 4 segments
and joined at the same intersections.
