Provide Two Matrix Method Used in EIA Procedure With Information Source Specified. Point Out Their Advantages and Disadvantages

This document discusses various matrix methods used in environmental impact assessments, including their advantages and disadvantages. It describes the Simple Matrix method, which lists environmental aspects and determines the effect of activities. While simple, it lacks detailed information. It also describes the Leopold Matrix, which globally presents environmental factors and anthropogenic impacts but does not explicitly describe spatial/temporal effects or linkages between aspects. Other methods discussed include the Ad Hoc method, which requires experts but examines short/long term impacts poorly, and Checklists, which are simple but do not distinguish direct/indirect impacts or link actions to impacts.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESMENT – 6

BY: ABIKSHAYA VENUGOPAL

1. Provide two matrix method used in EIA procedure with

information source specified. Point out their advantages and
disadvantages.

Two types of matrix method are:

• Simple matrix
• Leopold matrix.

➢ Simple matrix:
ADVANTAGES :

This is very simple method in which a list of environmental aspects is listed along the vertical axis,
against which we determine whether an activity would have an adverse effect, no effect or
beneficial effect. A simple “x” or “tick” is given under the appropriate column.

DISADVANTAGE:

As the name depicts it is very simple and only have very basic information. If we need detailed
information this can’t be used.

➢ Leopold matrix:
ADVANTAGE:

The advantage of the method is that it globally presents the action of the anthropogenic factors on
the environmental factors.

DISADVANTAGES:

 The one big disadvantage of the Leopold matrix is that it does not explicitly describe
spatial and temporal effects of the environmental activity. It merely gives us the
magnitude and significance of the interaction.
 Second, it tends to be too simplified when you require a comprehensive analysis of the
impacts on the project area. A numerical value of the magnitude and impact is not
sufficient for a contractor to understand the impact their activities are having and why
they should overcome it.
2

 Third, they cannot explain linkages between two environmental aspects. In other words, it
does not describe secondary and tertiary impacts. It is extremely likely that more than one
activity will have multiple levels of impacts on the environmental aspects of the project
area.

2. Provide example of other method used in EIA procedure with

the information souce specified. Point out their advantages
and disadvantages.

Two other methods used are:

• Ad Hoc
• Checklists

➢ Ad hoc:

Advantages:

Specialists on a particular area will give guidance.

Disadvantage:

 It requires expert
 Short /long term are merely examined on guess basis.
 Identification, prediction and interpretation of impacts are quite poor .

➢ Checklist:

Advantage:

 Simple to understand and use.

 Good for site selection and priority setting.

Disadvantage:

 Doesn’t distinguish between direct and indirect impact.

 Doesn’t link action with impact.
