Motherboard

This document provides a diagram and descriptions of the key components found on a computer motherboard. It identifies the 20-pin ATX power connector, DRAM memory slots, IDE connectors, Northbridge chip with heatsink, AGP graphics slot, Southbridge chip, multiple PCI expansion slots, CMOS backup battery, connectors for internal peripherals like keyboard and mouse, CPU socket, and CPU fan and heatsink mounting points. The document provides brief explanations of the purpose and function of each component.

20-pin ATX Power Connector- standard cable to supply the motherboard

with power. It includes 3.3 volt rail to power newer chips that need less than 5
volts of voltage.
Dynamic RAM (DRAM) Memory Slot (x2)- A memory slot, memory socket, or
RAM slot allows RAM (computer memory) to be inserted into the computer.
Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) Connector (x2)- electronic interface
standard that defines the connection between a bus on a computer's
motherboard and the computer's disk storage devices.
NorthBridge (with Heatsink)- The northbridge, also known as host bridge or
Memory Controller Hub, is connected directly to the CPU via the front-side bus
(FSB). It is responsible for tasks requiring the highest performance. Together
with the southbridge, they manage communications between the CPU and
other motherboard components.
Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) Slot- AGP was designed as a high-speed
point-to-point channel for connecting a video card (graphics card) to a
computer system. Primarily, it was used to assist in the acceleration of 3D
computer graphics. AGP is originally designed to be a descendant of the PCI
series of connections for video cards. Yet, it was replaced by the PCIe slots.

Southbridge- the southbridge implements the slower capabilities of the

motherboard in a northbridge/southbridge chipset computer architecture.

Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Slot (x5)- a local computer bus for
connecting hardware to a computer. It supports all the functions of a processor
bus. PCI is usually been called Conventional PCI to distinguish it from its
successor PCI Express (PCIe, PCI-e or PCI-E).

Complementary Methal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) Backup Battery- also

called memory battery, clock battery or real-time clock (RTC), is generally a
CR2032 lithium coin cell. The lifespan of the CMOS battery is estimated to be
three years when the power supply unit (PSU) is unplugged or switch off.

Connectors for Integrated Peripherals- A term used to describe a peripheral

device that is housed within the main container of the computer. These
internal devices – such as a CD-ROM drive or an internal Zip drive – are in
contrast to external peripheral devices such as a keyboard, mouse or printer. It
is used to connect peripheral devices to complete a computer system unit.

CPU Socket- contains one or more mechanical components that provide

mechanical and electrical connections between the PCB and a microprocessor
(CPU). Therefore, you can install a CPU on a motherboard without soldering.

CPU Fan & Heatsink Mounting Points- help keep cool and prevent it from
overheating. The fan moves cool air across the heat sink, pushing hot air away
from the computer.
