Preface
This module will help you prepare yourself for the assessment. It deals with CARPENTRY NC
II QUALIFICATIONS with focus on the three core competency 1.) Preparing/Staking out
building lines 2.)Fabricating formworks, and 3.) Installing formworks components. The module
will give you some information about Carpentry and it’s suitable for the student as their learning
material who wants to get NC II. This will enlighten you what carpentry really is, its importance,
purpose, advantages and disadvantages to human. Carpentry is a skilled trade and a craft in
which the primary work performed is the cutting, shaping and installation of building materials
during the construction of buildings, ships, timber bridges, concrete formwork

Below, will are the information sheets and questioning tools to answer, determining if the
candidate is ready to be assessed. This provides some instructions and safety precautions to be
followed before, during and after going to an assessment. It uses different assessment method to
identify different avenues applicable during the assessment.

Moreover the whole module will be served as your trainer’s guide or handbook as your
assessment.
Objectives:

In this assessment activity, the students are expected to:

a. Identify the tools and materials for staking out building lines.

b. Explain the tools and material for staking out building lines.

c. Select appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Qualification Standard: Carpentry NCII

Unit of competencies:

a) Preparing/Staking out building lines

b) Fabricating formworks, and
c) Installing formworks components

Information Sheet 1.1

Competency: Preparing/Staking out building lines

Learning Objectives:

a. Identify the tools and materials for staking out building lines.

b. Explain the tools and material for staking out building lines.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS USED FOR STAKING-OUT BUILDING LINES

It is very important to know the names and proper use of each of the various tools we
need in our works. In addition, application on their proper care and maintenance will give the
following advantages: efficiency of the work, quality speed, accomplishment, and accuracy.
Marking tools

The most common woodworking marking tools are pencil, gauge,

scriber, marking knives, awl etc. They are used for doing anything
such as cutting, shaping, drilling to a piece of wood. You can draw
a parallel line to the edges, jig jag line or rounds of a work piece
with them

Measuring tools

A measuring instrument is a device to measure a physical quantity.

In the physical sciences, quality assurance, and engineering,
measurement is the activity of obtaining and comparing physical
quantities of real-world objects and events.

Plumb bob
A plumb bob, or plummet, is a weight, usually with a pointed tip
on the bottom, suspended from a string and used as a vertical
reference line, or plumb-line. It is a precursor to the spirit level and
used to establish a vertical datum. It is typically made of lead,
stone or wood but can also be made of metal.

Water Hose Level

Water level or hose level sensor. This is a levelling system made
up of a transparent plastic tube full of, sometimes
coloured, water that uses the communicating vessels theory. It is
used by raising the two ends of the tube and marking where the
ends' water levels coincide.
Claw hammer
Used for driving and pulling out nails.

Bar Level or Spirit Level

A tool used to test the horizontal levelness of the
surfaces of material. It is framed in aluminum or
wood.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to

protective clothing, helmets, gloves, face shields,
goggles, facemasks and/or respirators or other
equipment designed to protect the wearer from
injury or the spread of infection or illness.

CARPENTRY

Carpentry is one of the oldest skilled trades and is still widely required in modern construction. It

involves the cutting, shaping and installation of wood (timber) for buildings and other structures.
Carpentry is a very important career because it touches everyone’s lives every day; this is why it
is very important for a person to learn this skill sometime in their life. Apprentices begin by
learning the basics of carpentry such as layout, form building, and rough framing.
