Ethical Wrong
The most apparent business ethical issue in "The Devil Wears Prada" was probably
the abuse of power and privilege. The Devil Wears Prada places a premium on leadership.
Fear was a significant factor in how things were handled on the Runway. Examining the
morning scene where Miranda is about to enter the office, and everyone becomes fidgety
trying to get everything ready for her and into their positions demonstrates this. Such a work
environment does not appear to be healthy. Next, while Miranda was walking to her office,
every employee who passed her would ignore her, and it was apparent when Miranda got in
the lift that a woman got out of the lift and apologised to Miranda. The employee was either
scared or wanted Miranda to believe she deserved to use the lift on her own. When Miranda
unexpectedly arrived at the office, it was as if such sins had surged the place where all the
employees were getting ready in their positions to look best and most stylish while working.
Miranda's eyes were catchy when she noticed her employee was not appropriately dressed.
Just like Andy's first day when she didn't wear high heels, Miranda looked from top to bottom
to signal to Andy that she didn't like Andy's shoes. Then Andy quickly changes the shoes
given to him by Nigel Kipling earlier.
Is it ethical for Miranda Priestly, the Runway Editor, to not have apprentices replace
her after she retires? Miranda never took the time to mentor or guide anyone and always
believed no one could do what she did to Runway. According to one of the five
characteristics of moral standards, Miranda should be preferred over other values, including
self-interest. Her action may not be wrong because she did not want anyone to imitate her
style or be backstabbed by her employee or mentee if she is mentoring any of her employees.
Still, it is wrong to prioritise self-interest over morality. What will happen to the company
after she retires from the Runway. What will happen to the company when she retires from
the Runway? There is a scene in which Andy tries to save Miranda after learning that
Jacqueline Follet will replace Miranda. Later, as Miranda and Andy are being driven to a
show, she explains to a still-stunned Andy that she was grateful for the warning but already
knew about the plot to replace her and sacrificed Nigel to keep her job. When Miranda retires
from her job, and there is no employee capable of replacing her, the company's profit may
suffer because competitors may defeat Runway's reputation if the company returns with less
experienced and knowledgeable employees.
1. Miranda's assistant, Andrea "Andy" Sachs
Miranda's next unethical moment occurred when she asked Andy to do more than her job
description as an assistant. Miranda called Andy even when it wasn't working hours because
she didn't care as long as she got what she wanted and expected her assistant to fulfil it. For
example, Miranda called Andy while having dinner with her father at a nice restaurant.
Miranda is forcing Emily to find another plane because her plan cancels due to bad weather.
She persuades Emily that the weather is not as bad as it appears, even though it could harm
anyone flying any plane at that time. Emily forgets his father to find a plane for her boss
because she does not want to be fired. Finally, the plane was unavailable, and Miranda was
disappointed because she could not attend her twin daughter's school play performance.
