Assignment 3 - Fall 2020 - Model Answer

This document contains model answers to an assignment with three problems related to construction project management. Problem 1 involves calculating the daily production rate and optimal number of mixing and finishing crews needed to achieve a desired daily production rate of 75 cubic meters. Problem 2 involves calculating the cycle time and utilization factor of equipment in an earthmoving operation, including a loader, three trucks, and a bulldozer. Problem 3 similarly calculates cycle time, utilization factor, and how the addition of a second truck would impact utilization for an operation involving trucks, a crane, and two crews.

Assignment 3-Model Answer

Problem 1:

- Cycle time (Operation) = Cycle time (Finishing crew) = 15 min

- Daily production rate (Mixing crew) = 0.5*(60/10) *8 = 24 m3/d
- Daily production rate (Finishing crew) = 0.5*(60/15) *8 = 16 m3/d

I. Daily production rate (Operation) = 0.5*(60/15) *8 = 16 m3/d

II. Optimal # of finishing crews with a single mixing crew (@ the first balance point) = Cycle time (Operation)/Cycle time (Mixing crew)
= 15/10 = 1.5 --> 2 crews or = Daily production rate (mixing crew)/Daily production rate (Finishing crew) = 24 / 16 = = 1.5 --> 2 crews

- Desired daily production rate = 75 m3/d

III. Optimum combination of mixing & finishing crews:
- # of mixing crews = 75/24 = 3.1 ---> 4 crews
- # of finishing crews = 75/16-= 4.68----> 5 crews

Problem 2:
a) Multiple Activity Chart:

b) Operation Cycle Time

Cycle time calculations Cycle time resource

Loader 3 * (5 + 1) 18
Truck 1 5+8+3+6 22
Truck 2 5+8+3+6 22
Truck 3 5+8+3+6 22
Bulldozer 3*4 12

Assignment 3-Model Answer

Cycle time Operation = Max. Cycle time of resource = 22 minutes

Cycle Quantity = 15*3 45 m3
45 ∗ 60 ∗ 8
Productivity operation = = 981.8 m3/d
22

c) Utilization Factor:

Problem 3:
a) Multiple Activity Chart:

b) Operation Cycle Time

Cycle time (Truck) = 12 mins

Cycle time (Crane) = 9 mins
Cycle time (Crew 1) = 10 mins
Cycle time (Crew 2) = 12 mins
Cycle time (operation) = 12 mins

c) Utilization Factor:

% utilization (Truck) = (12/12)*100 = 100 %

% utilization (Crane) = (9/12)*100 = 75 %
% utilization (Crew 1) = (10/12)*100 = 83.33 %
% utilization (Crew 2) = (12/12)*100 = 100 %

Assignment 3-Model Answer

d) Without redrawing the multiple activity chart, calculate the utilization factor for each equipment and the two crews, in case a second
truck is brought to site.

Cycle time (Truck 1,2) = 12 mins

Cycle time (Crane) = 18 mins
Cycle time (Crew 1) = 20 mins
Cycle time (Crew 2) = 24 mins
Cycle time (Operation) = 24 mins
% utilization (Truck 1,2) = 50 %
% utilization (Crane) = 75 %
% utilization (Crew 1) = 83.33 %
% utilization (Crew 2) = 100 %
