I. INTRODUCTION
When you were younger, were you scared of many little things like going to the bathroom on
your own, taking your medicine, getting a vaccine, riding a bike, or walking down the street on
your own?
Draw and describe those things that you wish you could do but could not when you were
younger.

II. EXPLORE
As you grow older, you begin to overcome some of your fears. These are somehow replaced by
other fears. But notice also that as you grow older, you become braver and bolder. As you grow
through life each day, there will be more and more things that you would need to overcome.
Here are situations that you might have encountered:
It was your first time to cross the street. You were nervous and shaking but you did so without
asking for help.
You are shy but were chosen to be the representative of your class to a speech contest. You
could have made an excuse not to join because you were too terrified by the thought of
addressing a big audience, but you showed up anyway.
Your tooth was giving you headaches so it was decided that you should go visit your dentist to
have the tooth extracted. You were scared out of your wits because you do not like that awful
sting of the injection that will make you numb to the pain. Although hesitant, you went to the
dental clinic.
What made you decide to do things despite your fears and the possible hardships you would be
facing? This is what we call fortitude. Despite your fears, you could at a young age. Fortitude is
commonly known as courage. It is one of the four cardinal virtues along with justice, prudence, and
temperance.
Draw inspiration from a young man whose brand of courage and fortitude saved other people’s lives.
Sajid Bulig
In Bocaue, Bulacan on July 2, 1993, an overloaded pagoda carrying devotees of the Sto. Niño
collapsed. Many of the devotees, women and children, began sinking into the depths of the Bocaue
River.
More than 200 persons drowned in what is now known as the “Pagoda Tragedy”. Many more
would have died if not for the efforts of people like Sajid, a 12-year old boy who repeatedly swam
back and forth to save other children from drowning. Sajid disregarded his personal safety and risked
his life which led to his untimely death.
His courage and bravery is an exceptional deed befitting him to be called our “Munting
Bayani.” Sajid posthumously received several awards including a Gold Medal of Honor from the Boy
Scouts of the Philippines and a Service Award from Ateneo De Manila University.
In honor of Sajid, a Sajid Bulig Presidential Award for Heroism was established (through
executive order 393) to accord official recognition to individuals who have demonstrated exemplary in
the service of humanity the way Sajid did.
