Module Description

This module provides basic knowledge and understanding about the law and the legal system.
Its primary goal is to provide a level playing field for students who do not have a background
in law by introducing them to the basic features and nature of the law as well as the legal
system at the national and international levels. The module presents various conceptions of
law, law’s relations with other modes of social control, the hierarchy and interpretation of
laws, the nature, status, and interpretation of the Constitution, and the different sources of
law. It seeks to enable students appreciate the role played by domestic and international law
in the definition and realization of human rights by familiarizing them with basic terminology
and concepts in domestic and international law and human rights law.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this module, students will be able to:

 define the basic features and functions of law;


 identify the sources of law;
 explain the how the law can be classified;
 discuss the law making and repeal process in Ethiopia;
 explain the legal and institutional frameworks in Ethiopia;
 differentiate the common law legal system and the civil law legal systems; and
 apply human rights terminologies.
