Exercise ASTU-1

This document contains 4 multi-part exercises involving refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The first exercise involves determining properties of a heat pump system using R-134a as the refrigerant including subcooling, mass flow rate, heating load, COP, and minimum compressor power input. The second asks about properties of an ammonia refrigeration plant including COP and power required. The third involves a two-stage R-134a system and determining the flash chamber fraction, heat and work, and COP. The fourth asks about properties of an ammonia system for food storage including compressor outlet conditions, evaporator inlet conditions, COP, and power required.

AAiT
ASSIGNMENT ON Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Excercises

1) A heat pump with refrigerant-134a as the working fluid is used to keep a space at 25°C by
absorbing heat from geothermal water that enters the evaporator at 50°C at a rate of 0.065 kg/s
and leaves at 40°C. The refrigerant enters the evaporator at 20°C with a quality of 23 percent and
leaves at the inlet pressure as saturated vapor. The refrigerant loses 300 W of heat to the
surroundings as it flows through the compressor and the refrigerant leaves the compressor at 1.4
MPa at the same entropy as the inlet. The condenser outlet temperature is 48.6 °C. Determine (a)
the degrees of subcooling of the refrigerant in the condenser, (b) the mass flow rate of the
refrigerant, (c) the heating load and the COP of the heat pump, and (d) the theoretical minimum
power input to the compressor for the same heating load

2) In a 15 TR ammonia refrigeration plant, the condensing temperature is 25°C and evaporating

temperature- 10°C. The refrigerant ammonia is sub-cooled by 5°C before passing through the
throttle valve. The vapour leaving the evaporator is 0.97 dry. Find: coefficient of performance;
and 2. power required.

3) A two stage refrigerating system is operating between the pressure limits of 8 bar and 1.4 bar.
The working fluid is R-1 34a. The refrigerant leaves the condener as a saturated liquid and is
throttled to a flash chamber operating at 3.2 bar. The part of refrigerant evaporates during the
flashing process and this vapour is mixed with the refrigerant leaving the low pressure
compressor. The mixture is then compressed to the condensor pressure by the high pressure
compressor. The liquid in the flash chamber is throttled to the evaporator pressure and cools the
refrigerated space as it vaporises in the evaporator. Assuming the refrigerant leaves the
evaporator as a saturated vapour and both compressions are isentropic, determine;
a) The fraction of refrigerant that evaporates as it is throttled to the flash chamber;
b) The amount of heat removed from the refrigerated space and the compressor work per
unit mass of refrigerant flowing through the condensor ; and
c) The coefficient of performance.

4) A refrigeration system of 10.5 tones capacity at an evaporator temperature of -12oC and condenser
temperature of 27°C is needed in a food storage locker. The refrigerant ammonia is sub cooled by 6°C
before entering the expansion valve. The vapor is 0.95 dry as it leaves the evaporator coil. The
compression in the compressor is isentropic, Cpl=0.963 kJ/kg.K Cpv=0.615 kJ/kg.K . Find:
a) Condition of vapor at outlet of the compressor,
b) Condition of vapor at entrance to evaporator,
c) C.O.P. and
d). Power required in kW.
