Ce 441 Foundation Engineering Retake Final Exam 2021 Spring

1. The document provides information and questions regarding a shallow foundation and retaining wall design problem for a foundation engineering exam. It includes figures of the cross-section of a rectangular shallow foundation and a gravity retaining wall, along with soil and geometric properties. Students are asked to calculate the allowable bearing capacity and pressure distribution for the foundation, and comment on its safety. They are also asked to calculate the factors of safety against overturning and sliding for the retaining wall and comment on its safety. 2. The document provides different soil and geometric parameters for the retaining wall design problem based on the last digit of students' IDs. Students are asked to analyze both problems, calculate key values, and evaluate the safety of each design.

CE 441 FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

RETAKE FINAL EXAM 2021 SPRING

18 June 2021, 18.15-20.00
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakkı Özhan
1. The cross-section of a rectangular shallow foundation is shown in the figure below.
Calculate the allowable bearing capacity by using Vesic method. Take FS=3, Ɣconcrete=24
kN/m3. (30 pts)
Also, calculate and show the pressure distribution at the bottom of the foundation. Comment
on the safety of the design. Is this design safe or not? (10 pts)

Ɣsat = 17.5 kN/m3
B=1.4 m Ɣdry=16.5 kN/m3
Ø=29°
C= 5 kN/m2

2. A gravity retaining wall is shown below. Use δ=2/3 Ø for the interface between the wall
and the backfill soil and use Coulomb active earth pressure theory. Use the interface
coefficient between the base of the wall and the foundation soil as 0.6. Take only weight of
the wall into account but not weight of the soil for the analyses but take passive pressure into
account for only sliding analysis, not for overturning analysis. Take Ɣconcrete as 24 kN/m3.
There is groundwater table and take Ɣwater as 9.8 kN/m3 Ɣsat1=18 kN/m3 and Ɣsat2=19.5
kN/m3 (60 pts)
Determine:
a) The factor of safety against overturning and comment on the safety of the design.
b) The factor of safety against sliding and comment on the safety of the design.
